It seems that our emotions are more powerful than they seem.

BBC reports that our emotions could lead to heart problems. Consider this for instance: A 44-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital because of "extreme crushing pain in her chest, radiating through her left arm." According to the article, it was a symptom of a heart attack, but the thing is, the doctors weren't able to detect it at all. It turns out, the patient's 17-year-old son committed suicide earlier that day, and the woman's emotional reaction to the crushing news triggered a physical response that's pretty much just like a heart attack itself.

Interestingly, this incident wasn't an isolated case. According to the BBC article, similar cases have been reported in Israel (at the eve of the Persian Gulf War) and in Los Angeles (when a 6.8 earthquake hit the city). And it seems it's not limited to human, either. Veterinarians have observed that when animals are about to get caught by a percieved threat, adrenaline fills the bloodstreamalmost making it poisonousand damages the heart muscle. They refer to this reaction as "capture myopathy."

No doubt, it's high-time that we stop underestimating our reaction to stress. While Johns Hopkins assures us that it's possible to quickly recover from this condition, it would be best not to let your emotions get the better of you.
