College is probably one of the wildest times of your life. It’s your first taste of actual freedom, where you get to meet new people, go to new places, and try new things.

But college isn’t just one big party; it’s spells great responsibility. Unfortunately, many young women seem to conveniently forget this and go on being impulsive, sometimes to their own detriment. This sort of brashness tends to influence the development of many bad habits and psychological conditions, one of which is alcohol dependence (AD).

Monika Kardacz Stojek, a graduate student in the department of psychology at the University of Georgia, decided to delve into the relationship between impulsive behavior and alcoholism, which was featured on ScienceDaily.com.

For her study, Stojek recruited 319 women in their first semester of college. Out of these, 235 were drinkers. Each participant was asked to undergo the Short-form Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (S-MAST), which is composed of questions about drinking behavior.

The results proved to be interesting. "We found that negative urgency, an impulsivity trait which describes a tendency to act rashly when experiencing negative emotions, predicted increases in symptoms of AD in young women across their first semester of college," Stojek explains.

In the end it’s all about emotional stability and self-control. College can be lots of fun – just learn to realize when enough is enough.
