If your mom has extreme mood swings and seems more emotional than she normally is, then she may be going through the menopausal stage. According to Mayo Clinic, menopause can happen in your 40s or 50s, but the average age is 51 in the US. It is a natural biological process where a woman can experience hot flashes, disrupted sleep, anxiety, or feeling of sadness and loss. Do these symptoms fit the bill? Here's how you can deal with your mom’s rollercoaster-like ride of emotions.

Don’t annoy or irritate her further.
Try to understand that your mom is going through a stage in her life where her hormones are going crazy. It is best if you avoid making her upset since that can provoke mood swings. Instead of complaining about the sudden changes in her behavior, try giving her compliments, whether on her cooking or the dress she’s wearing for the day–you don’t want to give her a reason to be angry.

Swap her usual coffee with tea.
According to Roland Griffiths, a professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, caffeine is the world's most commonly used stimulant and large quantities of caffeine can decrease blood flow to the brain by as much as 30 percent, causing severe mood swings and disorders. Tea on the other hand, has relaxing and calming effects.

Talk to her about it.
Sit down with your mom and tell her how you feel. Tell her you empathize with the situation and that you will support her all throughout this phase she’s going through.

Take her to the spa.
...or any place where she can unwind and relax. Since stress can make the symptoms of menopause worse, it's important that you let your mom relax. Take her to a spa or enroll in a yoga class where she can practice her breathing patterns and change them in ways that will help her to calm down.
