Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you should stop exercising, especially since according to a new study featured on TIME, expectant mothers who are physically active may have smarter children.

Researchers from the University of Montreal analyzed the brain activity of days-old infants whose mothers exercised before giving birth. They found that the children were able to process and recognize repeated sounds faster than those whose moms rarely exercised. In fact, the babies’ brains appeared to be more active eight to 12 days after birth compared with other kids.

Although these findings are good news to moms who wish to stay fit, it’s also important to remember that women with high-risk pregnancies should not attempt to do any strenuous activities. Expectant women should first consult with their doctors before starting any exercise regimen.
