Are you spending too much time sitting down? It may be good idea to stand for a while or take a quick walk, as Science Daily reports that getting off of your seat even for just a few minutes may help you lower the risk of chronic disease.

Researchers Sara Rosenkranz and Richard Rosenkranz from Kansas State University analyzed data on 194,545 men and women between the ages 45 and 106 years from a previous study. They found that sitting for long periods of time with very little muscle movement renders the molecule lipoprotein lipase (LPL) inactive.

LPL is responsible for taking in fat or triglycerides for energy use. When this molecule shuts down, metabolism takes a backseat, leading to an increased the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular health over time.

If you're one of those people who spend a lot of time tied to an office desk, make sure to take breaks. Standing up to get coffee, walking to the restroom, and taking the stairs instead of using the elevator may have a greater impact on your body that you think.
