Most people think that wrinkles and sagging skin are caused by "the forces of gravity," but in reality, it’s due to the loss of volume in the face. While most plastic surgeons recommend patients to get a facelift wherein "excess" sagging skin is removed, it sometimes results in a very unnatural look. For those who are curious about what else can be done, Dr. Alfredo Callanta, Medical Director at EMPIRE Centre for Regenerative Medicine has a solution. He says that people can undergo a process called fat grafting, which restores the volume of your skin, making you look younger.

What is fat grafting?
It restores the lost volume in your face using your own autologous fat harvested from either your abdomen or inner thigh area. "Fat grafting is a highly specialized procedure in which the right technique is key to delivering sustained, stellar results,"says Dr. Callanta.

Doctors take autologous fat from your abdomen or inner thigh area. After that, the fat is then purified and injected into your face, restoring the volume that you have lost throughout the years. There are no incisions, hence no scarring or prolonged downtime.

The entire procedure lasts only two hours and patients can resume their normal activities the very next day.

Aside from the face, you can also add volume to other parts of your body. Fat grafting can be used to augment a patient’s breasts or even reconstruct breasts after a mastectomy or breast removal surgery. "Fat grafting is the most effective alternative to increase volume under your skin and improve shape since it uses a patient’s own fat to reduce the risk of rejection or infection," Dr. Callanta continued.
