Thinking of switching to artificial sweeteners? A new study featured in Science Daily and published in the journal Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism may change your mind.

Apparently, sugar substitutes may not be as healthy as you think. In fact, consuming artificial sweeteners may cause the very diseases that you have been trying to avoid in the first place. Just like ordinary sugar, artificial sweeteners have also been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease.

Researchers also warn that artificial sweeteners may change the way the brain responds to sweetness, which suggests a lack of sugar satisfaction. As a result, you may end up indulging in even more sugary treats.

To avoid all this trouble, find a healthier substitute. If you need to consume less sugar because of a health condition or weight loss regimen, try natural sugar substitutes such as coco sugar, honey, and molasses instead.
