There are different causes of an upset stomach–acidity, indigestion, constipation, or menstrual cramps are just some of the common culprits. Instead of tolerating the pain, here are some ways you can give yourself relief for your troubled tummy.

Eat a banana or papaya.
Bananas are said to contain pectin, which helps to naturally firm bowel movements, while papayas encourage digestion, ease indigestion, and also help with constipation thanks to proteolytic enzymes such as papain, chymopapain, caricain and glycyl endopeptidase.

Place a heating pad on your stomach.
Whether it's because of something you ate for breakfast or menstrual cramps, another way to soothe the pain is to place a heating pad on the area. According to Reader's Digest, the heat increases blood flow to the skin surface and transfers the perception of pain from inside your stomach to the outside.

Avoid certain activities.
The Harvard Health Publication recommends that you avoid activities that result in swallowing excess air, such as smoking, eating quickly, chewing gum, and drinking carbonated beverages. It's also suggested that you get enough rest and try to reduce your stress levels.

Drink ginger.
Ginger's anti-inflammatory properties increase digestive juices and neutralize stomach acids. Aside from easing stomach problems, ginger also relieves pain from arthritis or muscle soreness, menstrual pain, upper respiratory tract infections, cough, and bronchitis.

Change your diet slowly.
Constipation may be one of the reasons your tummy is aching. Try incorporating food that is high on fiber such as fruits, vegetables, wheat bran and grains into your diet. According to researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center, fiber relieves constipation by adding bulk to stool and helping it move faster through the intestines. Consult with your doctor and a nutritionist first before giving your food intake an overhaul.
