Headaches can seriously lessen your productivity, and when you’re busy trying to meet deadlines, a throbbing head can be a huge hassle. Your regular painkiller may do the trick, but sometimes, a few natural hacks can lessen and even relieve the pain just as well. Here are a few things you can do to shake the discomfort off:

1. Drink water.

When was the last time you stood up from your desk to get yourself a glass of water? If you can’t answer the question and pain is starting to creep up your temples, then you may be having dehydration headache. Mayo Clinic lists dehydration as one common cause of headaches, especially in hot weather or after a strenuous activity. Quickly replacing lost fluids can help alleviate the pain.

2. Sip chamomile tea.

Stress is one of the most common causes of headaches. To help you calm down, take time off your computer work, prepare yourself a cup of warm chamomile tea, and take slow deliberate sips. Aside from being a great stress reliever, WebMD notes that chamomile is also great with settling an upset stomach and easing people to sleep.

3. Use hot or cold packs.

Take note of the kind of headache you’re having. If you feel that it’s due to tight muscles in your neck and shoulders, Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Everyday Health advices to use a hot pack on the affected area. If you feel that you’re at the throes of a migraine, use a cold pack on where the pain radiates the most.

4. Try aromatherapy.

There’s good reason why our mothers and grandmothers always carry around eucalyptus balms and oils. Everyday Health shares that eucalyptus can help relieve headaches and even lessen nasal congestion. Sniff on a diluted solution and try relaxing your posture for full effect.

5. Get a massage.

According to WebMD, massages “can reduce the number of migraines that a person has.” It can also help relax knotted neck and shoulder muscles, which often trigger tension headaches. If you can sneak a quick massage session during your lunch break, do so, but if you don’t have the luxury of time, try to self-massage in your cubicle.
