The Supreme Court has been asked to stop the implementation of the Reproductive Health (RH) Law, which was signed into law only on December 21.

According to an article on Inquirer.net, James Imbong, the son of Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) lawyer Jo Imbong, and his wife Lovely Imbong had filed a petition for certiorari against the controversial law, saying that it is illegal as it “mocks the nation’s Filipino culture.”

“This case will present the illegality of the Act as it mocks the nation’s Filipino culture–noble and lofty in its values and holdings on life, motherhood and family life–now the fragile lifeblood of a treasured culture that today stands solitary but proud in contrast to other nations,” the petition read.

In another article on ManilaStandardToday.com, the petitioners also claim that the RH Law “negates and frustrates the foundational ideals and aspirations of the sovereign Filipino people as enshrined in the Constitution.” The couple says that at least 11 of the law’s provisions go against article 2, section 12 of the constitution, which states that the state should uphold the sanctity of the family and protect the lives of both mothers and the unborn.

The Imbongs also maintain that the law goes against Article 15 of the constitution, which mandates the government to provide for “the right of spouses to found a family in accordance with their religious convictions and the demands of responsible parenthood.” The law is also said to violate the Filipinos’ constitutional right to freedom of religion and expression.
