It has been almost three years since Mark Zuckerberg introduced Facebook's Safety Check.

Due to the recent spike in catastrophes, be it natural disasters or terrorism, the social networking site has rolled out enhancements for the handy feature.

The Safety Check now has a permanent page, which allows users to find any emergency in progress and see how peers are doing, without having to confirm their own security. The earlier version required netizens to declare that they were safe before proceeding.

Case in point: a worried girlfriend can check on her beau who lives nearby a burning factory that she just saw on the news.

According to Facebook, the upgrade will make it easier for concerned parties to gather information and send help.

Some facets of the Safety Check still need to be improved, like its faulty trigger and obscure location, but this particular update is a welcome development.
