Two of the triplets of Davao Mayor Sara Duterte have no heartbeat.

The news of the fetal deaths was confirmed by her Chief Information Officer (CIO) Jefry Tupas earlier today. The mayor found out about it after her visit to the wake of her former private nurse Kristia Bisnon, who was one of the fatalities of the Roxas Night Market bombing last September 2.

“She cried all day Monday,” the CIO told GMA News in a recent interview.

Mayor Duterte earlier admitted that her fragile condition was giving her a hard time, explaining that she was wary of possible complications while “experiencing threefold all the pregnancy symptoms that a woman goes through.”

Although the mayor has not totally miscarried with one fetus surviving, many women around the world suffer miscarriage, with some not even clinically recorded.

The World Health Organization defines miscarriage as “the premature loss of a fetus up to 23 weeks of pregnancy.” Approximately 12 to 15 percent of clinically recognized pregnancies sadly end in miscarriage due to several number of factors including age, stress, and related health issues.

Many women who suffer miscarriage undergo a period of grief. According to the American Psychological Association, they mourn much longer than many people think, with some even showing depression and anxiety symptoms years after the miscarriage.

“Because it is medically common, the impact of miscarriage is often underestimated,” clinical psychologist Dr. Janet Jaffe of the Center for Reproductive Psychology in San Diego says. “But miscarriage is a traumatic loss, not only of the pregnancy, but of a woman’s sense of self and her hopes and dreams of the future. She has lost her ‘reproductive story’, and it needs to be grieved.”

While there are local laws in place to promote maternal health, there are very few institutions that offer psychological support for mothers who have miscarried. However, there are some who offer emotional and psychological support for those who feel that they are undergoing depression, so if you have experienced this sort of loss and are looking for other women you can speak with, you can visit our GirlTalk forums, or approach organizations such as the Natasha Gouldbourn Foundation or the Anxiety and Depression Support Philippines.
