Jose Rizal is by far the Philippines' most popular hero. Hailed as a Renaissance man because of his intelligence and appreciation for the arts, Rizal embodies the best of the Filipino.
 
Our national hero is a patriot, a doctor, a poet, journalist, novelist, painter, and polyglot. Rizal could write and read at age two. He grew up to speak 22 languages, including Latin, Spanish, Catalan, German, French, English, Chinese, and Japanese. He also excelled at architecture, cartography, economy, ethnology, anthropology, sociology, and drama, and he was an expert fencer.
