“If you like piña coladas, and getting caught in the rain,” thus goes the popular song by Rupert Holmes. Its real title was “Escape”, but thanks to its catchy chorus, it became more famous as “The Piña Colada Song.” This resulted in the cocktail’s widespread popularity, making it a staple in bars all over the world.

How did the Piña Colada came to be?
The Piña Colada has been the official drink of Puerto Rico, where it was said to have been invented, since 1978. The dates and the stories vary, however: some say that a pirate invented it in the 1800s, while others insist that it was first created by a hotel bartender in the 1950s.

What’s in a Piña Colada?
The International Bartenders’ Association’s piña colada recipe lists white rum, pineapple juice, and coconut milk as the main ingredients. Kat Nantes of Paire Cocktails and Pastries says you can also add a dash of simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar) to make the drink sweeter.

How do you prepare a Piña Colada?
It’s easy enough to make a piña colada: just combine all the ingredients together in a blender along with crushed ice, pour the slush into a goblet, and serve with a straw. Enhance the drink’s tropical appeal by garnishing it with a pineapple slice and a cherry.

When would be the best time to drink a Piña Colada?
The piña colada makes for the perfect summer drink, with its light tropical flavor and refreshing taste. Kat recommends you drink it while lounging by the beach on a sweltering afternoon.

How many calories are there in a Piña Colada?
A Piña Colada may be the perfect beachside drink, but its high calorie count can ruin your bikini body. A Weight Watchers article says that an 8-ounce piña colada can have as many as 450 calories and 18 grams of fat, making this delightful drink really bad for your waistline.
