Although it’s always been said to invest in memories more than in things, there’s no harm in buying stuff that could be beneficial to you in the long run.

Most people think that purchasing low-quality items that are ‘cheaper’ every now and then saves them a lot of money compared to buying something expensive – but in fact, you’re probably spending way more than you should.

“Those who are cheap are often afraid to spend money. They are willing to sacrifice quality, value and time in order to cash in on some short-term savings,” says Stefanie O'Connell, author of the book, The Broke and Beautiful Life. “Those who are frugal are resourceful with their spending, maximizing their [money], so that they can fund big picture wants and dreams.”

Remember, being thrifty doesn’t always mean saving money, it also means spending your money wisely; it’s about investing in things that you know would last longer. Here are some things you shouldn’t be guilty of investing in:

1. Shoes and clothes

While there’s nothing wrong with buying clothes from tiangges, you should also purchase items that will last longer than a month or so. Of course, you don’t have to burn cash at designer stores; there are several brands that sell quality clothes and shoes at reasonable prices.

3. A reliable laptop

It can be somehow difficult to know what brand is really the best when it comes to laptop durability and efficiency. If you’re looking to buy one next year, make sure you do your homework first. Do some research and ask around – the best recommendations are usually from techie friends!

4. Comfortable mattresses

5. Books

Stocking up knowledge and broadening your perspective on different cultures can be one of the best investments you can make; what better way to do that than by reading, right? Remember it’s never too late to start!

6. A sturdy car

6. A condominium or house

This could be one of the most important long-term investments you can make – especially if you have kids to raise. There are a lot of payment options you can choose from if purchasing a unit or house in one go is too much.
