^thanks sis! Yes, I'll keep that in mind :) Sana makita ko agad yung right barkada for me.

:) My advice is take one step at a time and enjoy. :) Don't worry, you'll find your friends/study buddies & don't forget to relax/chillax once in awhile.

Is it difficult to transfer to a different program during residency?
Title: Re: GT Doctors & Medical Students Thread #3
Post by: bleudskymd on May 06, 2012, 08:14:14 pm
^ I don't know. I guess it depends on where you're transferring and the program.

hi mga sisses my daughter is incoming 3rd year medtech student  sa UST, plan niya na mag med kailan ba dapat magtake ng NMAT, kasi nalilito kami kung 3rd year pwede na magtake or pag fourth year na siya bago magtake ng NMAT and saan ba maganda review center and need ba talaga pumasok sa review center or pwede na self study at bibili na lang ng reviewer, please enlighten us .  salamat.
Title: Re: GT Doctors & Medical Students Thread #3
Post by: FOURever on May 10, 2012, 10:25:09 am
^sis she can start taking 3rd yr december batch.. 2 yrs lang kasi validity ng nmat :)

May brains review center saka piccs ba yun near ust. Pero ako self study lang mas mataas nakuha than most of my blockmates na nag review center..

hi doctors,

I'm currently in a rut right now. Unfortunately, I failed Pathology. It was rather a big surprise for me dahil ok naman un grades ko during the 1st and 2nd sem, although bumaba lang ako nun 2nd sem, i just need to pass the final exams to pass the subject, unfortunately, I wasn't able to do so since I studied Pharma instead, knowing that I was already safe for Patho. So there, I took the remedials tapos, I was short of 5 correct answers to finally pass the subject. I had my paper rechecked and talked to the department chair to be reconsidered since patho lang un maiiwan ko, sadly, my appeal wasn't granted since the minimum passing level has been set prior to the remedials. As of this time, I'm really confused if i should go on with my studies. I have this worries like may tatanggap ba sa akin na reputable hospitals for PGI and residency, considering my really really bad set of grades, plus, up to now, I'm still way too afraid of doing iv insertions and phlebotomy, so much for my fear of needles. I cannot help myself but wonder if am I just pushing myself to go into the field? I'm really confused. Appreciate any insights on this. thanks.

PS.pre-med was psych so i have zero knowledge on the clinical application part of medicine.

Post by: bleudskymd on May 13, 2012, 08:13:29 pm
^ Hi sis. I'm sorry to learn about your fate in Pathology. Failing in 1 subject is not the end of the road and stopping your medical studies is not the best solution. If you quit, you'll disappoint your parents instead of promising them that you'll do better. I have a lot of colleagues who have failed in 1-2 subjects during their academic years (& consequently repeated 1 yr) but that didn't stop them from still pursuing their dreams of becoming a physician. Now, they're licensed physicians. Some PGI and residency programs do not look deep into the transcript of records (unless you pursue a specialty training related to your failed subject before). You'll learn the skills of IV insertions, phlebotomy during clerkship. Lahat naman dumaan sa takot, kaba. Don't worry, matututunan mo rin iyan. For now, concentrate/focus on redeeming yourself. Saka mo na isipin yung IV insertions, phlebotomy, etc. One step at a time.

You start to learn the clinical application of Medicine by 3rd yr. Then you'll learn more pagdating ng 4th year and beyond.

Goodluck to you and huwag kang bibitaw sa pangarap mo na maging duktor.

^thanks doc, your words somehow resurrected that dying hope in me. My mom wants me to continue studying despite of what had happened. I hope and pray that I would be able to redeem myself and work on the lack of skills and dexterity, and to overcome my fear of needles and other application/s thanks again:)

And the structures in biochem? Pati ba mga positions sa anatomy? Sorry sissies.. Anxious lang talaga ako and excited at the same time :D THANKS!

I currently work in a "famous" lol medical center in the Metro and my "work area" is sa loob ng doctors' quarter/lounge/work area, meaning, buong araw nakikita ko sila labas pasok sa room, hearing their raves and rants and chikas and all. Nakakatawa lang minsan pag may ibang tao other than us, flat affect sila, sungit-sungitan, pero kapag kami naman magkakausap, wala na bang mas kakalog pa? lol. But I salute all the MDs out there! ;D

Meron isang consultant doon nagkukwento about her relative na nag-quit yata ng med school just because nahihirapan na talaga. From residents to batikang consultant na. You really have to work hard and do well para ma-reach mo 'yung ganun. And kaya I salute all MDs kasi imagine, hindi nagtatapos sa med school & board exams ang lahat, pero sobrang worth-it niyan sa huli :)

^thanks for sharing that sis!

@bestfriendnijerome I'm a registered nurse sis pero hindi staff nurse ang work ko :) Pero still medical-related :) Pero super happy with this kasi nga mababait and cool sila. My immediate superiors are MDs din. Swerte ko lang may work station is inside the doctors' area kaya kahit papaano eh may kausap at friends ako lol.

@FOURever Good luck sis with med school! :)

At kailangan my sipag at tiyaga ka. Otherwise, walang mangyayari sa iyo. The perks, privileges follow later. They will come to you gradually and you'll get to enjoy them. :)

Dahil frustrated (medical) doctor ako (never got to go to med school coz my fmaily couldn't afford it), idinadaan ko na lang sa panunuod ng medical dramas ang pagkahumaling ko sa all things med, hehe. But seriously, I really do admire physicians, there's nothing like being able to save lives. :)

^Applied Linguistics, sis. Life in the academe is too toxic for me to fit med school in so it will remain a dream for me, hehe. I have a daughter who's just 2.4 years old, malay natin, sya na lang ang mag Med paglaki nya.

I can work with speech disorders, but I don't need tot have an M.D. for that. Pwedeng mag Speech pathology na lang. :)

For so long, I've lurked in these forums and reading this thread or something with a similar title. Grabe, from pre-med, to med, to internship, to boards, to pre-res! This year sort of rounded off the first part of training; passing the boards, finishing pre-residency, and moonlighting while waiting for the residency results.  Am going to start my residency on December. :) Everything, as in everything I've been through, was worth it. :)

I know what you mean.  If I back read ill probably come across posts about pacing USMLE steps, Philippine boards, pre res, US residency matching, getting into a residency program in the US and now in my final year of training applying for a fellowship.  Time flies, soon it will be job hunting and choosing a practice type.

Hi po! Nakatapos na din ako ng 1 year sa medschool and i can say super enjoy ako sa medschool pero ang daming pag hihirap din sa pag aaral. I am somehow bitter now dahil ang baba ng grades ko than what i am expecting especially sa histology! Di na daw pwede magcomplain since narelease na online yung grades :( but i am thankful na lang na pasado lahat. I just hope regular ako all the way because ayoko madelay gumraduate.. Mahirap daw 2nd year :(

^congrats sis!:) 2nd year is a lot tougher than 1st year. Say hello to killer Ps, Pedia, Pharma, Patho! Do not be complacent porque mataas na un grades mo nun 1st sem. Remember my story? I got too complacent with Patho dahil mataas ako dun nun 1st sem, 2nd sem, bumaba para pero kaya pa naman. dahil sa takot ako sa pharma, puro yun ang inaral ko kaya i flunked the final exams ng Patho (all i need to do to pass patho is to pass the final exam) kaya nag removals ako sa patho. then come removals, i flunked the exam by just 5 points short from the passing level. oh well. lesson learned

Sabi nila wag daw ako mag alala sa patho but then mas ok na rin yung hindi magpabaya kesa sa natatakot in the end.. Planning to read some notes from upperclass this May para kahit papaano may idea na ako.. Di kasi ganun kaganda yung premed ko kahit mataas grades ko nung premed. Di related eh haha.

And really, prayers ang bestfriend ko ngayon. Ang daming time na nadown ako sa first yr, pero buti na lang yung church ng school, nadadaanan ko pauwi ng dorm so stay muna ako para mag isip isip.. I'm also participating sa mga medical and surgical missions ngayong bakasyon since wala naman akong gagawin, mas ok na ring may purpose ang bakasyon ko.. Hay. Inspired ako ngayon, sana tuloy tuloy to :) thanks sis! Magpopost ulit ako dito kapag may mga bago at kapag may tanong ako sa inyo :)

^samantalahin mo ang vacation :) ako. this is my very last summer vacation before clerkship. Anong gamit nyo na book sa Pharma, is it katzung or goodman and gillman? Mas better pa din if you read the books than relying on the trans. kadalasan kasi kulang kulang un content ng trans eh. Sa micro naman, purely memorization. say hello to staph, strep and friends :)
Its much bearable for me to accept un mga outcome ng grades ko after magdasal re: exams, un tipong, God, I have done my part, now I leave it all up to you, take charge of my exams, and then He'll bless you with the grades that you were praying for :)

May ibibigay daw saming handouts eh.. Talagang last year ako "nayanig" and i cannot do anything but pray eventually nakalma naman ako..

^yes sis sobrang mahal. i can buy 2 ipad minis with the book cost. and actually that total cost is actually minus my microbiology book which i already had from undergrad. so i'm really thinking of just buying a tablet. haaay. i'm all books last year pero ngayon woah i need to regroup. though i'm thinking having a lot of thick big books is part of being a med student. so di ba? ugh still cant decide.  :(
tapos kami kasi, we have transes. pag malapit na exam puro trans na lang inaaral ko. haha!  ;D
Title: Re: GT Doctors & Medical Students Thread #3
Post by: FOURever on May 04, 2013, 08:06:02 pm
^sis, what i do minsan, per chapter ako nagpapaprint kapag nahihirapan ako sa topic, less than php1 lang per page ;) tapos book bind after every shift or sem kasama na yung trans at handouts na nakaayos na per topic. Haha buti din yung ibang books meron ako from undergrad

Edit: if really may budget, bili na ng books. Or paisa isa.

During our time, hindi pa uso ang e-books. Thus, we used the actual physical books plus transcribed notes from upper batches & other sections. Another option, photocopied pages from a book from the library. I am able to make highlights on my book/s, underline &/or encircle must-know details, jot down important side notes & place stick-on notes (or those flag-lets). Mas naaalala ko yung details & nagiging fulfilled yung pag-aaral ko. In preparation for exams, mas mabilis na lang ang pagreview ko since may marks na. Even during our review for the local board exams, actual books (photocopied nga lang) pa rin ang ginamit namin.

When I try to download e-books, hindi ko na na-o-open yung file. If I do, sumasakit mata ko kaagad, or I get bored. Chances are, hindi ko rin maaalala yung nabasa ko (kung mayroon man ako nabasa, Haha!).

for doctors/med students. which do you prefer? physical books or ebooks? tia! :)

Right now I prefer e books.  It's been a decade since I've been out of med school and back then we used paper textbooks.  I like to make notes and highlights, now that ebook platforms
Could do this I am definitely leaning towards electronic.  I like that I'm able to take my electronic library everywhere I go, which is especially useful when I travel so I don't have to lug around heavy books.
Dropbox integration is a staple for me, even journal articles, PowerPoint lectures I have are all electronic.
Amazon has a food collection of textbooks and some can even be borrowed, haven't tried borrowing yet.  Most times the ebook versions are less expensive.   Haven't asked the med students about this but it looks like the school followed Stanford's suit..

Title: Re: GT Doctors & Medical Students Thread #3
Post by: FOURever on January 03, 2014, 03:01:31 pm
^hi!

Ang balita ko last year sobrang mahirap daw. Haha!

NMAT has no failing grade, so you don't have to worry/be anxious. Depends on which (medical) school you want to apply, you must strive to do good. Some schools treat NMAT scores as "for formalities sake" only thus they do not require a cut-off score; while some schools treat it seriously due to high competition, kaya may cut-off score sila.

My pre-med was Physical Therapy. Upon inquiring with my target medical school, they had a cut-off score (65 pa noon; ngayon tinaas na nila). Determined, I enrolled at a review center for NMAT and got a score of near 90. :)

Sobrang hirap naman kasi ng tanong dun.. so if you believe you can review by yourself, ok na siguro na di na mag review center. If you think you need guidance and you dont know how to start reviewing and what to review, apply na sa review center :)

Medyo hirap din business namin ngayon pero good for me kasi nagkaroon ng changes sa academic calendar namin. Hopefully, makaipon before enrolment starts kaya tipid tipid din although i am also willing to stop temporarily kung di talaga kaya (but they want me to finish on time).

By the way sissies, 3rd year na ako hahaha! Parang kelan lang. 1st year was hard but 2nd year was harder. Grabe ang pharma but i enjoy it. This summer vacation, i am reviewing my subjects in 1st yr and 2nd yr na for revalida. Excited much but no time na to review everything next year eh

I'm a registered nurse and currently working naman. I'm afraid pagdating sa future and may family na ako e mawalan ako ng time for them. Ganon po ba talaga nangyayari?

residency depende sa institution and ano gusto mo ispecialize. like sa PGH 12h duty na sila.sa iba, yes tama ka sis 24hrs ang duty. not naman 48. after training magexam ka for specialty boards.then diplomate ka na kapag napass mo yun.

@lil_mango: I also sometimes felt like that when I was a student, lalo na sa ibang 8-week rotations. What I did was make sure that there'd be something to look forward to, like yung nearest rotation na gusto ko, or kahit small stuff lang like dinner out with service-mates. Kailangan din kasi mag-relax every once in a while. And try to study, always.

Ang may residency training in Laguna is at Perpetual Hospital in Binan. I'm not familiar kung ano residency programs meron doon. If willing ka mag-commute, may residency sa Muntinlupa (Med Ctr Muntinlupa), Cavite (DLSHSI), or Tanauan, Batangas (Daniel Mercado Med Ctr). Asian Hosp has residency in Pedia only.

lumabas na ang matching sa amin mga sis! super fail ng school ko btw uuugh. so done with them. nakapasok naman ako sa first choice ko, which is Lourdes, okay naman ba dun? do you guys have feedbacks about it? thanks!!!

it's still overwhelming na weeks na lang bago ako matapos sa medschool, it's so surreal. parang dati di ko pa maisip how to make it through clerkship, parang kahapon lang first year medstudent palang ako then i'm graduating soon. ang galing.  ;D

Hehe!)

hello mga sis! lumabas na ang march 2017 PLE results. thankfully my pgis who failed from the sept boards ay nakapasa na. andami kasing nagfail nung sept 2016 if i know kasi nag-iba na sila ng format of questioning.
anyway nakakapressure kasi it's my batch's turn na for the boards this sept 2017. parang i'm always tired ngayong internship, minsan/rarely lang ako mag-aral. nakakakaba tuloy. i guess i need to forego "rest" and really really put effort into studying. kaya lang pag sobrang napapagod talagang suko na ang katawan at isip ko. :(

Galing niyo! Frustrated Doctor ako!
But, I graduated BSN and now licensed Nurse na din! Never got the chance to continue studying med, kasi I got pregnant and naging priority ko na din studies ni Baby. Naging practical lang siguro ako. Hahaha but I have a lot of friends na PGI na ngayon.
GOODLUCK TO ALL FUTURE DOCTORS!

Hello sisses,

I need advice please.

My hubby is an RN-EMT. He'll be working out of the country for 2 years. By the time he finishes his contract, he'll be 33. I want him to go to med school. I've been telling him and pushing him into it because he's very passionate about work and really good at it. Also, I know naman na it's a lifetime career so maybe it wont matter much if he starts late. But he thinks otherwise. Feeling nya he's too old for med school. And also, nag aalala din sya sa finances kung kakayanin namin kasi we have 2 kids and another one on the way. As for me naman, feeling ko naman kaya namin as long as maayos management ng finances namin. So the very issue now is, it is really too late for him to go to med school?

Do you have classmates po ba na over 30 na nag take ng med but still make it? Thanks!

Before I graduated BSN, may mga naging ka-buddy ako ng medstudents who are around that age po. I think you should consider the finances po talaga. But yes, everything is worth it after naman!

Wow. Hi Doctoras 😍 i don't know if I'm allowed to post here kahit di naman ako med student or Doctor na pero...I'm planning po kasi of taking a second course, Med po sana. The thing is, wala naman akong pre-med course. Nabasa ko that would be fine so long as you can take yung kulang pang units na dapat macredit sa'yo to qualify for med. Tama po ba yon? Advise naman po, kasi feeling ko I lost a lot of time when I took my first course instead of the course that I have been dreaming since bata pa ko.

Thank youuuuu! ☺️

@ the lioness:
i have classmates in medschool who are 30+ and someone a bit older na rin. i dont think it will matter much. though a word of caution,  a good more than 50% of medstudents are really "young", meaning they've never had a job before, no kids, no worries in life so baka di maging ganun ka-align ang level of maturity nila vs your husband. in my case naman, even if there's someone na different, med students are not rude naman and they'll treat your hubby nicely and would even be understanding of his situation. feeling ko nga your hubby has an edge vs the kasi alam na niya how things work in real life, yun nga lang he has to go back to the basics, pero okay na rin yun. mas maiintidihan niya and mas magiging interested siguro siya. the practice of medicine is a culmination kasi all the subjects na inaral sa medschool.
you guys as his family should then be ready to be very understanding sa kanya, kasi of course he will not have the usual time he has to give to you. kailangan niya mag-aral etc. the first three years of medschool (that's when you're still in the classroom), for me keri naman. aral-aral lang, though depende na rin siguro sa grasp of knowledge and all that. the first 3 years are nothing compared for the rest of our medical career (lol). yun ang mahirap, i never got burned out studying, but the junior internship then post grad took its toll on me though thankfully i pushed and pushed. ganun naman sa med career, tanggap ng tanggap, sacrifice everything left and right. then residency, dun ang todo nakatira na siya sa ospital. yun lang.

^ hi sis. may mga medschools na tumatanggap naman kahit di "premed" talaga ang course. check uerm, i have classmates na engineers nung undergrad.  ;D ;D

hi sis yonamarie and  iwannabeasupermodel, thanks much! nabuhayan ako dito. i'm so close to giving up on my dream for him of which i know na gusto nya din. i wont be pushing him naman if ayaw nya talaga. but i really feel na he loves to, nagiging negative lang sya kapag naiisip nya na it may be too late. or baka di nga namin kayanin.but once na he gives his 100%, i'll be 200% supportive.

i know being a doctor is a lifetime feat. maybe super stressful din at physically draining. something na i never really thought of dahil tamad ako. some people thinks na status quo daw ang pagiging doctor. i guess they naver have an idea. gusto ko din yung daughter ko maging doctor. i know na possible na may iba syang gustuhin, pero kino condition ko sya for that. i make her go with my hubby during rescue trainings so she'll have exposure and maybe eventually likes it.

cheers to all doctors here!

^hi sis! just to appease you, i also started med school in my late twenties. almost all of my classmates were fresh out of college: very naive about life in general but very competitive and hardworking. at first, i really had difficulty relating to them but eventually i adjusted. i even had(have) a barkada in medschool who are 6-5 years younger than me. they don't seem to mind naman. i guess ang mahirap lang for him is adjusting to the strict schedule and really sticking to it. the 1st 3 years(as what the other sisters pointed out here) will be ok kasi aral2 ang focus mo but when you get to clerkship and PGI, lalamunin ka na ng sistema. walang holiday and breaks. mahirap kung mahirap, minsan wala kang tulog straight 36 hours(siguro naps in between) and ligo.  You will miss the people outside the hospital-family and friends. but then it's the life we choose, so we manage. and if you really are passionate about it, masaya siya. kung mainit ulo mo at gusto mo na mag quit, itulog mo lang iyan and dinner with your medschool buddies, ok ka na ulet for another round of duty. Sabi nga ng isang mentor ko, not everyone is called to be a part of God's healing ministry. It's a calling.

Good luck to your husband. I'm sure kakayanin niya iyan. And our motto always: Rest if you must, but don't quit! Masaya makakita ng pasyente na napagaling mo or natulungan mo kahit in small way :)

ang mahirap talaga yung araw-araw pumapasok, doesn't matter if holiday or what not. ansakit sa puso pag gigising ako ng sobrang aga on a sunday or a holiday and my whole street is literally asleep, naririnig ko pa yung aircon nila na bukas pa lol. habang ako hustling hustling kahit dec 25 pa yan. lol.

what kept me going after a "from day"  ay yung sinabi ng isang residente ko na ganun naman daw talaga buhay, magduduty ka, matotoxic, mapapaaway or mapapagalitan ng seniors, ikain at itulog na lang daw, tomorrow is another day.  ;D

Never thought of going to med school as a stepping stone to working abroad.  I went to medical school and became a doctor because as a child I?ve always been interested in science.  Being an astronaut or a scientist was too far fetched so settled for becoming a doctor.  I ended up up working abroad though.

I have a med student boyfriend and he is really studying hard. :)

Where?d everybody go?

hello sis omg it's been years wahaha.
well ito finally in my last year of residency!!!
just thinking na nakikinita ko na ang end of the tunnel makes me want to cry chos.
i was too busy juggling residency and giving a few minutes for myself these past years.
after EVERYTHING, it is still very difficult, all the more now that i'm a senior. nung una it was so difficult and stressful and pressure levels x 1000 because i already have juniors depending (and blindly believing in my skills and knowledge lol) but now almost half year thru my senior year (jusme sana naman di na kami iextend with the covid and all since pumpasok pa rin naman kami), i dont think of quitting as frequently as i used to. ang mindset ko na lang is pagod na ako and i wanna go home lol. di na rin ako masyadong kinakabahan every duty day. pag toxic keri lang, just another day in my life lol. the day will always end, and ayun nga, eat and sleep and tomorrow is another day.  ;)
