Difference between wedding and engagement ring

My gf and I picked out our engagement rings today and I had a full blown meltdown cause I was like "wait... What's the difference..." (We have a stressful life rn, the meltdown was bound to happen over something) https://19216801.onl/ https://routerlogin.uno/

I settled on "hey, we are already doing nearly everything untraditional (wlw, trans woman, getting married months before we do anything like a wedding, etc) if the rings don't match what an engagement ring or wedding ring should be, what does it even matter." But I'm still curious, is there a difference?
