hyphenated surname

I'd like to ask who among you hyphenated your surname recently? Anong process? Lalo na kung mag-re-renew na ng passport?

I read somewhere na kung mag-re-renew ng passport, dapat daw at least 1 year before expirry at kung may name change, it needs some PSA (NSO) doc.

Any info would help. I'm in a dilemma kung mag-ha-hyphenate ako or totally drop my maiden name.

I was planning to do this after I got married kaso I was told by a friend na if I decide to hyphenate, it will be required syempre in all my IDs, passport, license, etc. and every time I write my name, naka-hyphenate dapat.

Ang issue ko talaga with hyphenating is I have 3 first names kase (3rd name is 3 syllables pa) then my husband's last name is 4 syllables din so if I write it down, sobrang haba na and baka hindi na magkasya sa mga forms (like yung may mga box per letter). With my single name pa nga lang, putol na yung name ko sa SSS system sa haba, what more if I hyphenate, so I just decided to have my maiden name as my middle initial then take my husband's last name.

I have an aunt though that due to her several businesses, hindi niya pinapalitan yung last name niya to my uncle's. And kilala na siya by her peers sa current last name niya. If papapalitan niya kase lahat ng businesses niya to her married name, sobrang hassle. Pero sa passport and IDs niya, last name naman ng uncle ko.

With regard to the legal docs you need, I think you can choose to hyphenate when you start updating. Like if mauuna ka mag change ng status sa SSS, pag sulat mo ng new name, hyphenated na yung last name. I think SSS will honor the original marriage license, kahit hindi pa yung PSA.

Yung PSA naman is yung marriage certificate mo since it will be the source document of the others (SSS, Philhealth, etc.) to show na you got married that's why you're changing your last name. Medyo mabilis na din naman mag request sa PSA ngayon, I needed documents for my new employer and mga 2-3 days, dumating na yung document sa bahay.

I dropped my original surname and made it my middle name, and took my husband's surname as my own too, kasi 4 syllables ang apelyido niya. i am an OFW and I had my passport renewed here sa embassy, I needed to give an original PSA marriage contract to support the name change. basically, pinarequest ko ito sa Pilipinas, at pinadala ko dito.

For SSS and PAG-IBIG, mom ko nag-asikaso, and for my driver's license naman, ako nung umuwi ako (which includes going to the main LTO office in Makati kasi hindi daw pwede gawin ang name change sa renewal center lang, like dun sa Ayala MRT). All asked for the original PSA marriage contract. Except for my COL account, all my IDs already reflect my husband's surname as my last name.

Sa driver's license kahit na you totally changed to your hubby's surname, sa main pa talaga?

^ yes. kasi regardless of how you do it, adding or subtracting surnames to our name is still a name change, which is a major change of information. so need to go sa mga main office. buti na lang naabutan ko pang bukas yung LTO nun. mabilis lang rin naman, pero yun nga, dun talaga.

Merong mga 'main' LTO branches, not necessarily yung main main. Pero yung smaller satellite offices, renewal lang talaga. I had mine changed sa Marikina branch kase considered 'main' siya. You can call the branch near you muna to check first if they can accommodate or not, kesa dumayo sa malayong branch.
