What have we learned from the recent floodings?
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:08:31 am »
Guys, what have you learned from the recent floodings?  on a individual level. yung tipong,

example A - I'll buy a small generator
example B - I'll build and elevated platform on my huge backyard so i can put my car there the next time it rains.
example C - I'll relocate to a place na mataas.
example D - I'll will put 2 big water tanks kasi  nawalan kami ng water.

and please don't put,

"oh we need to take care of the trees."
"we need to do garbage segregation"
"kasi its climate change/global warming"
"throw garbage correctly

I know the above things are true but it will take decades to take effect considering our system.

I'm looking for real, practical answers that we can apply should something happen again, knock on wood. we all know that our government is poor and that we have no real drainage/sewer/flood system.

thanks in advance.  ;D

learned na from the previous floodings na nakita ko sa tv kaya the house mismo is elevated not just the garage. :) so far ang napagusapan namin ng mom ko is, i have to get a 2nd water tank installed both sa bahay ng mom ko and here sa bahay ko, mahirap maubusan ng malinis na tubig..

food, important na magkeep lagi ng food sa pantry, coz we'll never know kelan kakailanganin ng madaming food supply.

teka isip pa ko.. :P wala pa kong tulog eh, lag na ang brain cells ko haha!

Dapat may 2nd floor or third floor yung bahay, kung may roof top mas maganda.

yeah, i think maganda din kung ang roof top ng 2 or 3 story house eh yung hindi lang yero...yung tipong may magagawa pa kayo sa roof instead of sitting on top of the yero and braving the wind and rain.

yung isang 2 story house namin, since alam namin na pwedeng abutin ng tubig kung may matinding baha, ginawa lang naming simple living room/gathering room yung ibaba. lahat talaga nasa 2nd floor.
so with the recent floods, oks lang kami dun sa ibaba dahil hindi naman magarbo at madaming furniture and fixtures. i also had a generator installed a few years ago. naglagay din ako ng malalaking best tanks.storage rooms for food and a separate storage room for fuel.

I also think that, if it has been raining for 4-6 hours straight. huwag na sigurong papasukin ang mga bata. an employee of mine was so worried about her son when she got home from work. kasi nawawala yung son niya. good thing nahanap din niya yung anak nya numerous hours later, halos gabi na ata if not the next day,im out the country kasi, but 4 of her son's classmates drowned. pano kasi they had to go somewhere, school thingie, held outside school. so they hopped from one class mates house to another. ang nakakabanas pa eh yung teacher hindi pumasok.

Must not throw rubbish   like plastic bag, styros etc...on roadsides. Learn how to recycle.

Must be prepared for things like this so as not to be caught flat footed.

i don't see how saying that "i need to be more aware of the environment hence i should take care of my junk" is NOT on a micro/personal level of thinking. eh totoo naman na malaki kinalaman ng basura.

mga sis, im more concerned on PRACTICAL solutions. tama kayo pagdating sa basura at lahat. but its way too idealistic in the Philippine scenario. but even first world countries can't cut their pollution levels. The US criticizes China for their polution levels but won't cut on theirs. pakapalan ng mukha.

but kindly keep in mind and respect the limitations that i have set at the beginning of the thread..

maraming salamat.

learn to recycle. kita naman yung result if we throw the trashes everywhere, bumabalik din satin during times na may typhoon..

always be prepared. stock up on food and other basic necessities. we dunno when calamity would come and we'd need these things.

if masama na yung weather and you have to leave the house (go to work, etc.), check muna if safe ba or not.. better be absent nalang than mag-risk tapos get stranded in the end..

I just hope offices (or the gov't) would also consider yung pag suspend ng work during typhoon or yung after ng calamity.. kasi I noticed, always lang schools yung suspended e.. pero yung mga workers pinapapasok pa rin. syempre they also have to consider if na-affect sila ng typhoon/ flood badly, kelangan din nila mag-ayos ng houses nila.. or yung pag may bagyo mismo, kaya madaming na-stranded din e.

apparently may mga nagsasabi, since ang mga dams natin ay matatanda na and might crack kapag full, some one decided to release some of the water to ease pressure. kaya nagflood ng ganun. kasi pag nag crack ang dam, mas malaki ang problema.

Isa sa mga naisip ko aside from matutong magswimming, kailangang magtabi ng life jackets, salbabida and rechargeable lamp. (i hope it makes sense).

Iv'e learned not to depend totally to the government, alam na nga natin na palpak yung system natin dito, so wag na tayong mag depend sa kanila.

exactly sis, yan ang purpose ng paglagay ko ng limitations when i started the thread. I'm glad you saw my point.

gusto ko sana idiscuss yung mga pwede nating gawin. i may be able to segregate my basura, and recycle etc and it won't change reality that much if there are thousands who do not do what i do... but say, if i can afford to build a 3 story house and an elevated parking lot, i can give immediate security to my family and our belongings.

after what happened, napaisip din ako bumili ng life jackets, just in case. hindi kase ako marunong mag-swim :)

dapat we prepare a small bag (preferably water-resistant o naka-ziplock) na andun yung mga absolutely kailangan ma-save if something happens. kapag kase emergency mahirap mag-isip ng straight. so if something happens, grab your family and bag and go.

I need to invest on various waterproof stuff--bags, ziplocs, jackets, etc.

-stock up easy-to-cook foods and mineral water, just in case

Been there been that, come, lets join us.

- dapat may 2nd floor ang bahay namin
- dapat may generator na rin
- magpalagay na rin ng poso kasi pag walang kuryente, wala rin kaming tubig!
