Title: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: happy_pomelo on March 22, 2010, 05:08:16 pm
Hi people!

We recently moved to our new house and we're still recovering from the expenses.

Least of our priority is the rear lot (200 sq. m.) and it's a mess. The idea is to have additional 2-car garage with roof (to also serve as multi-purpose covered area) and a garden. I don't know where to start as I've been told it would probably take about P100k plus for this project.  I'm hoping my 14 month old baby could have a place to frolic and play.  I actually intended to celebrate her first birthday last January at home na kaso di pa tapos ang bahay nun.  But looking at this mess, hindi talaga pwede.  :'(

Hopefully pati ang front area and sides eh maayos din.

We already have the lanai and some garden sets/picnic tables and benches to start with. We also have a mango tree (and other fruit-bearing trees) and I want a sort of batibot around it.

I'd welcome any ideas from everyone.

Here are the photos:

I highly recommend you get a landscape contractor talaga, sayang naman kung basta basta lang ang landscape, ang ganda pa naman ng house mo.... if you want, i could recommend my contractor. medyo flexible naman sila sa pricing.... tapos napapakiusapan pa anytime na kelangan mo ng trabahador kahit di related sa landscaping or kung may gusto ka ipaayos....

Thanks for taking time out to visit this thread and reply to my post.

Sige mommy_cynch, pa-PM ng contact details ng contractor mo. I truly appreciate it.  I'll scout din naman later on.  By the way, project is in Las Pinas ha.

By the way, I think you got a great deal sa house (and lot?) mo.  The lot area is huge and for P2.6M, it's really a steal. :)  Keep us posted with your (and your son's) gardening. :)

Thanks again!

Yup house and lot na sya, lot area is 412 sqm and floor area of the house is 300 sqm (3 storeys kasi), around 100 sqm lang na occupy sa lot kaya laki ng garden ko.

I'll PM the contact details of my landscape contractor.... laguna based sila kaya ok lang las pinas....

Congratz!  Pretty house.   IMO, you will spend more than P100thou to have it landscaped.

Mind the drainage, and the lighting lay out... very expensive to re-do those things.

When you consider landscaping.. find a way to camouflage your water tank.
Also, what is that big structure to the left of your area when facing the rear of your house?  Yours or your neighbor's?  Treat that too parang hindi eyesore.  If yours,  the easiest thing to do if you aren't gonna demolish it is to let ivy creep all over it.. parang wherever you look later on, it is "green"     Wait a month or so before you go into actual landscaping works.. too hot now.

You gonna put in a pool?
Have some water feature .. it will make your garden more interesting.

Thanks Aquacharly!

That's what I've been told, allot more than P100k for landscaping, with truckloads of garden soil as one of the requirements. Eeeeek!  That's why I'm researching the best suppliers, meaning pinakamura.  For now, I'm working on a lesser budget.

That structure you're referring to is actually our wall.  This backyard used to be the extension of our old house which we had demolished.  Hence, you'll notice the irregularly shaped walls.  And I agree, medyo eyesore sya and had to be "downlighted" as with the water tank and pressure tank housing.  A pool might be too hard to maintain.  Small household lang kami Aquacharly, and we have very few relatives to invite over. :)

We'll start the landscaping towards the end of May, nearing the rainy season.  I hope.  (Our weather now is so unpredictable!).  My contractor also just finished his house and had his front yard landscaped - poor plants namatay sa sobrang init!  :-\

There is a Game Plan you can start off with now.

Get a landscape architect to draw up a plan for you.  Do not get a contractor's plan... dyan ma isahan ka kasi they maximize their sales so kahit na hindi kailangan or will not survive in your yard due to the orientation and existing adjacent properties... saksak lang ng saksak and you will end up with ugly plants n 6 months.

Or, better still, if you have friends with gardens you like -- who will let you busisi their gardens -- go and look these over.  Take pictures, specially mind the practical details... like drainage, lighting, etc.  That way you can give the landscape architect a better idea of what you want.

The blueprint is worth the PF you pay for.   It is complete ha... from drainage to lighting to the kind of plants (including height of plants and no. of plants) you will put in.   elevations too are included, lahat.. as in, puede mo na implement in stages.

This hot season, you can start with the garden base... soil additions, placement, finalization of elevations, etc.. including of course the drainage and electrical lay outs.

Tapos lagyan mo na ng grass.  Like golf course grass, it will thrive in this hot weather... Basta you have it drenched dilig before 830AM;  and then again in the afternoon... pagnaka singaw na the heat.  Do not water in the afternoon while mainit pa or the grass feels hot to the touch.

Just those works will give you a lot of return per peso investment.  It is gonna be a big deal for you all to  have that wide green expanse.  Saka mo na utay utayin the rest of the plants.

I forgot... have metal works fabricated to encase the water tank... you can ask your landscape architect what to do about it.  Or, kaya mo yan...  just think it out including the practical considerations required for cleaning and maintenance.   I have seen some tanks encased in trellis like metal works tapos pinagapangan nang creeping plants.

Work on it soonest coz well,  the experts say that in terms of per peso investment, it is the garden that gives the best bang per buck.   :)
Yours has the added advantage of space/size.  Open space is the new luxury feature nowadays, remember that.   :)

^ I didn't know that landscaping entails this much work but holds that much return! And I thought makapahinga muna ako after the construction.

Thanks for all your inputs Aquacharly! Di lang pang interior (home management), pang exterior pa! LOL!

I actually wanted a space where we can hold my daughter's first birthday party last January but during that time construction was still on going.  So we had to forego the party-party and settled for a simple family meal lang.  I've lowered my standards na, I'm just looking forward to put to use our old garden sets and picnic tables. :)

If you have a family member who is a rabid or dedicated gardener willing to pour time and effort into it all... suerte mo.
But let us put it this way... my [textspeak!] at one time was so engrossed in gardening... he did a SIL's garden, and accdg to my SIL  nakakainip kasi hindi puede rush her dad,  hindi puedeng pintasan or magreklamo ... etc.. and since her dad brought over his also aging gardneers... hindi nya matulak to work faster.

Lighting and drainage can be nonexistent or just pa oido oido ...but ...
It is good to have a good plan to start with, and expert advice.  You can implement in stages, timing timing nga...  It is gonna be wasteful if after time and money spent,  you are not satisfied with your garden.

For people with garden areas... keep in mind that you have an advantage over most people now.   So make the most of that asset.

Mommy_cynch,

How much is the daily rate for your contractors?  Although I'm done with the first half of my project, I'd like to compare rates sana for the next half.

TIA!

Pakyaw sila. Although with the maintenance, electrical needs, they provide me with workers (300-350 per day). medyo napapagastos lang ako kasi if wala silang lakad papuntang manila, ako ang sasagot ng fare from laguna to pasig... ngayon, may pumupunta na lang na tao nila 2x a month to maintain the garden.

Wow sis ganda naman ng house mo and sobrang laki ng space for the garden.

I also want to have a beautiful, big garden of our own kaya lang mahal kasi ng lote eh kaya maliit lang space namin for the garden. Saka mga halaman naming may papaya, malunggay, oregano, etc, hindi yung usual na ornamental plants that I see in gardens. Ano kayang magandang grass for the garden?

Hi Happy Pomelo.

I recently had the same problem.  We started building our house last June 2009 and we moved in last March 2010.  Our last area is 370+ and our floor area is 250+. Due to budget, we told ourselves that we will not concern ourselves with the garden.

Luckily there were landscapers who went to our house during the construction.  We asked them to submit the quotation and a drawing of what the garden would look like.  We do not like too many plants because our house is zen type.  Sa akin as long as simple, mawawala yung kalat sa lawn then okay na. We got the cheapest and right now we are just asking the personal gardener of my architect to maintain it.

May mahahanap kang mura trust me.  Mura pero maganda.  If you are not happy with what they can offer, tsaka mo na lang pagandahin.

Thanks for all your inputs.

I just haven't posted the recent developments in my garden.  :)

The front curb and front yard were already landscaped, also the first half (nearer the lanai) of my backyard.  I'm happy to report that just this week we had the first harvest of fresh leaves from our basil.  :)

The second half would have to wait, we wanted a roofed garage there and a small compost pit.

^Sis, would love to see pictures of how everything worked out for your garden. :)

P15k i think is mura na ha. 2 years ago ang quote sa akin is P20k. bermuda, plants and stepping stones. pero siyempre depende sa area pa din. malaki ba garden mo?

mga sissies here.. if you're really interested in landscaping your garden.. better go to guiguinto bulacan.. that the equivalent of divisoria when it comes to plants.. the vendors there will also be happy to do the landscaping job for a fee, but definitely cheaper than landscappers in manila or qc..

if you're not really at ease with them designing the garden, you can search the net for pics and have them copy it for you.. you'll definitely save a lotof bucks ;)

Title: Re: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: rianne_mallows on May 13, 2011, 04:33:35 pm
^IMO if kasama trees.. tama lang ang price.. BUT if may existing trees na sa place.. overpriced siya
Title: Re: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: iamasinger on May 13, 2011, 07:00:03 pm

Title: Re: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: rianne_mallows on May 13, 2011, 07:44:26 pm

Title: Re: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: iamasinger on May 13, 2011, 09:31:23 pm
kapag kasama daw ang likod aabot ng 100k.

yaiks! mahal pala ng palm tree. presyong guiguinto bulacan ba yang 2-3k?
Title: Re: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: rianne_mallows on May 14, 2011, 03:57:26 am
oo sis.. presyong guiguinto.. madalas ako jan.. mura na yon.. well, depende kung gaano kalaki yung likod mo.. 10k not bad na..

would you believe, ate ko spent 6k kakapiraso yung flower box niya.. isang dipa width, then kalahating dipa yung length.. waaaaay overpriced ::) rate sa ortigas yun..

onga pala im a bro not a sis  ;D

sis kaya sinasabi na high maintenance ang blue grass, dahil mas mataas ang water need nya than carabao grass and also mas dapat na nimo-mow ang blue grass. if you want spikey or medyo thin na grass, go for blue grass or bermuda...if mas gusto mo full carabao grass.

sabi sakin ng hardinero, hindi daw muna lalagyan ng fertilizer yung bluegrass kasi baka daw masunog.tama ba yun?what kind of fertilizer and how ofter and the method of delivery?

onga pala how often do you water your bluegrass?

dami kong tanong sis baka may bayad na to  ;D

hi bro...let me point out muna na wala akong blue grass sa garden namin haha...ako yung tipong design ng design pero di ko ginagawa ang sarili kong bahay LOL (the carpenter's door is always broken?)  ;D

Regarding reseeding: Bago magreseed, pull out muna nag weeds and other debris manually, tas prep the soil kung masyadong compacted (aerate) para makapenetrate ang water ng mas maigi. Nilalagay to mostly sa mga dried out na parts, so dapat alisin mo yung mga dead grass. Scatter mo with hands pwede na.

LOL

woa! thats a mouthful  ;D

haha thanks ate  ;)

by the way linagyan ko naman ng stepping stone so di ko talaga sya aapakan  :)

^anong color ng bulaklak? yellow? kung yellow malamang peanut plant yan (tumitiklop pag pagabi na) or wedelia (low maintenance to and maganda pag full).

Hi everyone!

I'm glad active ulit ang thread na 'to.

To iamsinger (nice garden sis!) and gogreengorgeous (thanks for all the info):

It's been more than a year since I started this thread.  I got a friend to help me out (hobby-hobby lang nya, di nga lang gratis, shy naman ako sa kanya) with the garden.  I think 3 weekends ko pinaayos nun before the blessing last August 2010.  Due to budget constraints ang napaayos ko pa lang eh yung sa front curb, front and a bit of the backyard. I'll post the recent pictures soon. I forgot my Photobucket account details na.

Matrabaho pala ang garden and I have to get gardeners for the regular maintenance. ;)  During rainy season ang bilis tumubo and kung papabayaan papangit agad.  This happened to my garden, at nakakaawa hitsura kase ang layo when the garden was newly landscaped. :((  Kaya pala my mom before maraming portion ang pina-semento na lang ang bakuran namin at some point. LOL!

For optimum results, tend to your garden daily para manageable ang trabaho.  Best to get gardeners to trim the plants/grass every 4-6 weeks.  Study rin how the plants grow, some might be too bushy for the place they were planted.

I'm trying to learn though, una hanggang bunot-bunot lang ako ng weeds then last weekend I tried to repot some plants.

Sisses, ano ba easiest way to get rid of worms? And I thought they make the soil more fertile.  How about weeds?

Maybe we should start a Gardening for Dummies club dito sa GT. :)

earthworms:
As far as I know, ok lang ito kasi it means na healthy ang soil mo kaya they thrive and ok rin na may earthworms kasi they help na ma-aerate yung lupa (tagabungkal ba)....pero kung sobrang dami..ayaw ko imaginin hahaha feel ko spaghetti na ewww.  ;D

yung millipedes parang minor garden pest yata ito e. kasi kinakain yung outer layer ng plants and seedlings.

gogreengorgeous, hindi ko pa natatanong sa kanila kung ano ang magandang indoor plants. but i've read somewhere na magandang gawing indoor plants yung nakakapagpurify ng hangin sa loob. lalo na at madaming mga toxic fumes na inilalabas yung mga common gamit natin sa bahay like xylene, formaldehyde, benzene, so on and so forth. at isa sa mga narecommend na halaman ay ang bromeliad. hindi ko lang alam if that plant can thrieve in bulacan. bihira kasi akong makakita dun sa guiguinto ng bromeliad... hindi ko alam kung prevalent ang millipede sa bulacan. nagawi ka na ba dun sa bahay ninyo?
Title: Re: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: gogreengorgeous on September 16, 2011, 06:15:19 pm

^ youtube sis dami how to videos  ;) madami na plants yung 5k. i suggest, unahin mo yung grass, pero onti lang ilatag mo, mga 50% to 75% lang ng space, kakalat din naman yan. patience lang ang kelangan. personally, ayoko ng instant garden, mas gusto ko yung ako yung magpapalaki ng plants. what i do, i buy plants na gusto ko, mga 1 plant of each kind, then from there, propagate nalang from cuttings ;D and if patient ka talaga, try growing from seed. very rewarding ;D

Question, madali ba to tumubo at paano ipropagate? sinerach ko sa net i cute lang daw yung stem tapos ibabad sa tubig for 2 weeks, pag may roots na, ska itanim. Thanks! =)

If I may ask, gaano kalaki yung area na ni-landscape nyo?

Post by: cloudzy_09 on September 02, 2013, 08:22:09 pm

Title: Re: Landcaping ideas on a budget
Post by: gogreengorgeous on November 13, 2013, 03:42:11 pm
Like other plants or containers, basta mag-ipon ang water dun pamamahayan talaga ng lamok.  ;)

--- Other than simply  maintaining your garden.

we've already asked 3 landscape artists for their quotation sa garden namin, and among the 3 the lowest is 40k, all in na daw which includes grass (not sure tho sa type of grass,  bermuda/blue gass ata, will clarify pa kasi mil ko kausap ), garden soil, plants and labor (kami na daw bahala pumili ng plants na gusto namin :o).. the area is around 100 sqm, originally nasa 140 sqm but we decided na portion of it eh palagyan na lang ng tiles para pwede namin lagyan ng garden set/outdoor dining...the other 2 naman sabi nasa 300 pesos/sqm of grass (using frog grass), excluding soil, labor and plants pa, so sa grass pa lang around 30k na (aray ko po hehe)..super simple design lang naman actually gusto namin, it  will be mostly covered with grass para maging playground ng kids ko tapos isang side lang and the front portion ang may plants, the other side pinalagyan na namin ng stepping stones..napa-install na din namin mga lighting fixtures so everything is set na, grass and plants na lang talaga ilalagay nila..as for the water feature, medyo 50-50 pa ako dito, later na lang siguro..

We're about to change our grass. We have the bermuda grass ever since, pero habang tumatagal, parang ang hirap imaintain, ang tindi ng damong ligaw, kakabunot lang tapos eto na nanaman siya, lalo ngayon tagulan ang bilis lumaki lol... any idea anong price range ng frog grass? nagcanvass kami sa area dito sa laguna, around 120-150 per sqm hindi kasama labor. Okay ba yung ganong price?

Post by: imeego on September 25, 2014, 04:34:47 pm

^OMG ang mura nyan ha, 60/sqm tapos they sell it for 300/sqm here in cebu, times 5 agad :o buti na lang we opted to hire the services of another landscape contractor, 40k all in na which i think fair enough na din although di frog grass ang nilagay nila ;D

Oh well!
Alagaan mo nalang yung grass mo sis.

Where can we buy running bamboo sa QC? Around how much kaya?

We have a corner lot and cyclone wire pa lang ang bakod so we'd like to plant bamboo for privacy para di kami kitang kita sa labas. Also, nagrereklamo na ang anak ko na "our garden looks so willy nilly." Lol.

Any leads? Ok ba bumili sa QC circle?

For several years now, my brother has had a magnificent lawn. Almost every weekend, our families get together for a barbecue. It is not difficult to make a beautiful place of rest at all. When my brother decided to plant lawn grass and decorate his yard, we could not implement his plan for a very long time because of many problems. One day we went to the site https://www.growgardener.com/the-5-best-kentucky-bluegrass-seeds-for-your-lawn/, and we saw everything we need there. After a while, my brother grew a lush lawn. He is very pleased that his plans have come true.
