Salaries in IT

Hi guys! Is there anybody who works as a software developer?
I got confused when I read an article about IT specialists' average salaries ( and realized that my husband with 10+ years of experience makes less. I just don't get, does it matter in which state you live? We are from Colorado and being a software developer here is like being a doctor.
