News flash: Now’s the time to shop! According to Lifehacker, January is officially the best month to buy clothes. Makes sense, considering all the post-holiday sales and markdowns before the latest stocks ship in. If you made bank this week, consider spending some of that hard-earned dough on fresh digs. New Year, new wardrobe, I always like to say.
Question is, how “new” is new? I, for one, will be the first to admit that it’s easy to hit a plateau of familiarity when it comes to fashion. You shop for what you’re used to, what you’ve tried and tested, what’s the simplest to slip on when you’re having a busy day or the safest to don when you’re feeling bloated. Your shopping bag ends up brimming with white shirts, neutral separates, blue jeans, and yards of black (my personal favorite).
Nothing wrong with any of the above—they’re called “classics” for good reason. And that straightforward, goal-oriented approach to shopping is hardly a crime, either. Most women will stick to what they know to be flattering and functional—and rightly so!
But once in a while, it’s never a bad idea to dive into something different. It doesn’t have to be a vast departure from what you usually wear—some wild, wacky trend that intimidates you or disrupts the flow of your well-crafted sense of style. It doesn’t have to be an extreme makeover, in other words. All it takes, really, is one little twist (a pleasant surprise!) to breathe new life into an old look.
Enter: color. Buoyed by a good selection of it and a more or less daily dose, you’ll never be the girl in a fashion rut. Even if you stick to the same formula for years on end—crisp top, tailored trousers, basic flats, what-have-you—you’ll ooze brand-spanking-newness every time you get dressed.
Last week, FN shared Pantone’s Color Report for Spring 2013 (all vivid greens, cool blues, and juicy citrus hues). I’ve scoured the wares over at TheMall.ph for closet additions in these shades, so if you’re in the mood to shop, start now! Click through the gallery for 10 chic, colorful essentials I’d love to see in my closet—or anybody else’s, for that matter. Have a great weekend—and shop ‘til you drop!
