So, I’m assuming you’ve all heard about Pinoy designer Michael Cinco’s big award-show debut last month? If not, here’s the gist: Dubai-based Cinco, who gained international exposure after his appearances on America’s Next Top Model, was Sofia Vergara’s designer of choice at this year’s Golden Globes. Incredible, right?
The Modern Family star walked the red carpet in a glittering black mermaid gown with a strapless bust and curve-hugging fit. In her pre-show interview with Ryan Seacrest, she admitted that she had never heard of Cinco before; nevertheless, and despite her tendency to stay away from black, she thought his dress was “amazing.” Watch the video here!
This is another notch in the fame belt of the Pinoy-blooded designer, who already had an elite following (including Lady GaGa) prior to the Globes. Naturally, it’s also a point of pride for the rest of us who are cheering him on. Cinco now joins the ranks of other Filipino fashion designers Monique Lhuillier, Oliver Tolentino, Maristela Ocampo, and the like, whose creations are favored by the Hollywood set. Like Manila-based designers Rajo Laurel and Francis Libiran, who have each dressed Tyra Banks, Cinco is set to gain more global recognition than he’s possibly ever had. After all, it wasn’t just anybody who wore his gorgeous gown—it was Sofia-va-va-voom-Vergara!
And now, given the particular bout of luck experienced by Cinco at the Golden Globes, I’m on stand-by for a repeat; not just for him, but for the Pinoy fashion industry at large. To have homegrown talent broadcast on such a level would not only be an honor, but concrete proof of times a-changing (remember, the Philippines is now considered Asia’s new tiger economy!).
In any case, all this award-show fever has got me hankering for some serious dress-up, especially with the Academy Awards right around the corner. Admit it, haven’t you ever wondered what it would be like to win an Oscar? Practiced your acceptance speech in front of your mirror? Pretended to tell Giuliana Rancic who—not what, who—you were wearing? I have! I can’t act to save my life, so my Oscar statuette will be coming from Greenhills. But that’s what pipe dreams are for.
In the spirit of Pinoy pride, here are five Oscar-worthy gowns by great local designers to choose from. Which one would you wear? (Dibs on number five.)
