When it comes to maintaining a healthy, youthful-looking looking skin, some of the best tips undeniably come from dermatologists. During Manulife's recent wellness webinar, Dra. Vicki Belo, M.D talked about the important skincare (and self-care) habits we can practice for better skin, and here are some of the ones we've picked up from the renowned beauty expert:
1. Get some rest.
You've probably heard this a thousand times but it bears repeating: Sleep is important. "You should really get at least seven to eight hours of sleep a day," reminds Dra. Vicki. "You shorten your life if you don't sleep and you decrease your immune system which is so important nowadays."
The beauty expert also stressed out the importance of sleeping at the right time. She said, "Something that maybe the viewers or the listeners out there don't know is that it's also important what time you sleep."
According to Dra. Vicki, the hormones that help the body "reverse aging" are only released with darkness. "That means you should be asleep by 9 p.m. [or] 10 p.m. It's better that you wake up early at 4 a.m. but you should be asleep from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. because that's when the hormones come out."
2. Apply your eye cream in the morning!
Most people (including ourselves!) would usually apply eye cream before hitting the sheets, but it turns out, slathering your under-eye area with thick, rich creams at night could actually cause a side effect: puffiness.
"Don't [apply your eye creams] at night", advises Dra. Vicki Belo. "If you apply your eye cream at night, you just wake up with little eye bags because [an eye cream] is moisturizing; it'll absorb oil and water so you will only look like you cried."
Additionally, the dermatologist to the stars also reminds Pinays to "stop rubbing your eyes," as it's a common cause of dark circles, aside from genetics and weight loss. "Rubbing your eyes can cause pigment around your [eye area]."
3. Welcome collagen drinks into your routine.
Interestingly, Dra. Vicki Belo mentioned that our bodies lose one percent of collagen per year of our life. "So if you're 20, you've already lost 20% of your collagen and when you're 30, it really begins to show. Your skin [loses its] plumpness."
Unfortunately, the dermatologist adds that "you cannot get collagen from your food because they're hard to break down." This explains why collagen drinks and supplements are quite popular. The collagen found in drinks, for instance, "is already broken down into amino acids which are easily digested and absorbed by the body," she explains.
"In your 20s to 30s, drink one sachet a day, but when you're already 40 and above, you've already lost 40% of your collagen, so [drink] two sachets a day."
4. Apply sunscreen even when you're at home.
"[People] always ask me what's the best anti-aging I can recommend and that's [applying] sunblock because the sun really destroys your skin more than anything," notes Dra. Vicki. She also pointed out that it's best to still apply SPF even when you're indoors.
While your windows can protect you from sunburn-causing UVB rays, they cannot block UVA rays, which cause the skin to age.
At the same time, your laptop screens have "radiation and blue light," explains the beauty expert. "[These] can cause pigmentation, so when you're at home, you should wear sunblock. The best kind of sunblock is a physical sunblock so that means it [contains] titanium dioxide. It's kind of like a mask that blocks radiation from [penetrating your skin]."
