1. Keep your nail beds clean.
Body oils and unseen debris affect your nail polish's staying power. Wipe them all off with a cotton ball soaked in polish remover.

2. Use products that will help your manicure last.
It's an obvious tip, we know, but using base coat, top coat, and a long-wearing polish can really extend your nail job's life. Try an at-home gel system that requires no curing time for an easy, salon-quality, chip-free DIY mani.

3. Use thin coats of polish.
Building up the color with thin layers of lacquer guarantees a chip-free mani as opposed to swiping on a thick layer, which can flake off faster.

4. Apply an extra coat of polish on the edge of the nails.
Do as the manicurists do: Paint an extra layer of lacquer on the tips where chipping starts.

5. Stay away from zippers or any hardware that might botch your nail job.
If you're having your nails done, avoid wearing clothes with zippers or make sure to use the restroom before your appointment. It also helps if you pay for your mani-pedi first, so you won't have to unzip your bag and get cash from your wallet with freshly-painted digits.

6. Wear open-toed footwear.
Expose your toes to allow your pedicure to air-dry throughout the day. Polish may appear dry on the surface, but the layers of lacquer underneath it need proper time to set.

7. Reapply top coat every two days.
Give your digits a glossy reboot by brushing your nails with top coat. If you already spot a chip, brush glitter polish on the tips. Remember, glittery lacquers can last an eternity on your nails!

8. Moisturize your hands and feet.
Hangnails can cause chipping, so anointing your fingertips and toes with cuticle oil every night will soften the cuticles. Also, slathering on a bit of lotion will deliver the much-needed moisture to your hands and feet.
