In a perfect world, we girls wouldn’t have to deal with unwanted hair. With waxing as our best hair removal solution, it’s good to know how you can keep your next waxing session as pain-free and your skin as smooth and hair-free as possible. Learn more about the age-old art of hair removal with these nuggets of waxing wisdom.

1. It originated from ancient Egypt.

Since the time of the pharaohs, smooth and hair-free skin has been a standard for beauty. Egyptian women would remove hair from their body (including their hair!), using a variety of tools, such as tweezers, pumice stones, beeswax or sugary waxes.

2. The Romans came up with the first forms of depilatory creams.

They hated the sight of pubic hair so much that girls would remove them upon puberty, using tweezers (ouch!) and the mother of hair-removing creams, called "philotrum" or "dropas."

3. In Turkey, there are dedicated rooms for women to depilate.

A recorded text in the 15th century testifies to the Turks considering pubic hair growth as a sin. Women would go to the public baths called "hammam" to have their hair removed in special rooms. This practice still exists in Turkey to this day.

4. Wax strips have been around since the 1960s.

They were inspired by the ancient all-natural sugaring process in the Middle East. Interested in recreating this hair-ridding substance? The ingredients are simple: sugar, water, lemon juice and salt. Just combine and let thicken in a saucepan, stirring until a syrupy-like consistency is achieved.

5. Don’t apply toner the morning before an eyebrow or upper lip waxing session.

The idea is to loosen your pores as much as possible, so that the wax won’t hold on to your hair follicles as much.

6. You should exfoliate before and after getting waxed.

Sticking to this routine saves your skin from unsightly bumps and ingrown hairs. A method called dry exfoliation or dry brushing is said to not just get rid of dead skin cells, but also improve blood circulation and detoxify the body. Cop this method by using a soft-bristled brush.

7. Increase your water intake to reduce your skin’s sensitivity.

Excess acidity in your body stimulates increased skin sensitivity, so steer clear of alcohol, caffeine and acidic beverages like orange juice and sodas.

8. Use lemon juice to deal with ingrown hairs.

Never ever break the skin and excrete the ingrown hairs because doing so will damage the skin's surface. You can let the ingrown hair loosen up through warm compress and gentle exfoliation. Squeeze a little lemon juice on ingrown hairs to zap those dead skin cells, loosen the hair under the skin, and prevent scarring.

9. Popping anti-acne pills? Don’t get waxed.

Strong pimple-fighting medication can actually increase your skin’s sensitivity. Make sure you don’t have any immune or circulatory system problems before getting waxed.

10. It’s best to work out one to two days after.

Sweating it out at the gym can wreak havoc and cause irritation on your newly-waxed bits.

11. Waxing your own brows? Use white eyeliner.

you’d like to apply wax on using white eyeliner. This serves as a guide so you don’t end up waxing other eyebrow hairs. Use baby oil to clean up any excess wax.

12. Waxing in your teens does not guarantee thinner or lesser hair in your adulthood.

The key is still very frequent waxing. Plus, the amount of reduced hair growth still largely depends on your skin and hair types.

13. Yes, there is a difference between a Brazilian wax and a Hollywood wax.

In case you didn’t know, yes, there is a Hollywood wax, and it involves removing all hair down there. The Brazilian wax leaves the pubic hair just above your labia.
