It may have been more than a decade after the airing of the last episode of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, but Dean Cain still continues to carry the name and the fame of the iconic superhero.

In the recent ToyCon 2016, an event powered by PLDT Home Fibr, the actor recalled his elation about getting the much-coveted role of the Man of Steel. “When I first got the role, I was extremely excited to get the job... I didn't feel the pressure until I put on the tights and the cape... and that was kinda scary. I was more concerned that people wouldn't like me as a character.”

The series aired from 1993 to 1997 and was considered a success, garnering 2 Emmy awards and 13 nominations. It also had a cult following, as well as a global fan base. The role defined his career, and although he was interested in doing other characters and expanding his portfolio as an actor, he was not at all bothered being forever labelled as “Superman”. “For me, that was a great launching pad a great place to start my career. You become a worldwide face and your anonymity is gone, but it's also wonderful because you can keep on working,” he explained. “When people think of Superman, they think about me. [They’ll say] ‘You’ll always be Superman to me’ – that’s great. I embrace that.”

Dean is currently in the series Supergirl, where he plays the father of the lead heroine.

“To play the dad is different,” he said when asked about what he felt about handing the cape to his Supergirl successor, Melissa Benoist. “I was 27 when I was cast as Superman, and [Melissa] is now also 27… I’m quite happy about it. It think it’s great… [Melissa] is phenomenal. She's a far better actor than I was.”

And to any Superman fan who is aware that there are multiverses within the DC Universe, the question of whether Dean Cain will again don the red cape in a series cross-over was unavoidable.

“I can’t say much about that,” he laughed. “All I can say is that there are lot of exciting things that will be happening in the new season.”

We’re definitely looking forward to that.
