She’s a showbiz sensation (as proven by the string of hit TV series she’s starred) and a jaw-dropping beauty (her marvelous mug graces countless billboards and print ads across the nation)—but Marian Rivera knows that there are two sides to every success story. In the June 2010 issue of Cosmopolitan, the actress is candid about the downside of fame—there’s the total lack of privacy, the constant threat of controversy, and the often unfounded criticism from anonymous naysayers. Her response to all the negativity? “Deadma,” she tells Cosmopolitan. “Bigyan mo lang ng importansya ang mga taong love ka; at d’un sa mga taong hindi ka gusto, deadma!”
After nabbing the title role in the Philippine adaptation of MariMar—and starring in a string of primetime smashes like Dyesebel, Ang Babeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang, and Darna—Marian’s on- and off-screen romance with actor Dingdong Dantes has kept her name in the presses every week. Whether it’s good news or bad news, the tabloids sell like hotcakes! And while this might seem a gross invasion of privacy to some, Marian has learned to face all the rumors—and haters—with resilience. “Lahat ata ng artista nachi-chismis na may anak, nagpalaglag, at kung anu-ano pa. Pero as long as alam ko kung sino ako, bakit ko pa pag-aaksayan ng panahon ‘yun?” she explains.
Indeed, there’s no time to feel down when your career, love life, and family life are doing splendidly. For now, Marian splits her time between Dingdong, friends, and family and her showbiz projects—the Saturday sitcom Show Me Da Manny with boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and the upcoming drama Eternal Love.

PURSUE YOUR DREAMS
Marian believes that if there is something you want to do in life, you should do everything in your power to make it happen. “Gawan mo ng paraan para makuha mo [yung gusto mo], gawan mo lahat,” she says. This way, you will be actively pursuing your dreams—and hopefully making them come true—instead of sitting on the sidelines and wondering “What if?”
APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORTERS
“Mahalin mo ang mga taong nagtitiwala sa iyo,” advises the actress. How often do we hear of “little people” who are neglected after the star they helped put on the map leaves them high and dry? To succeed the right way, you must never forget the people who believed in you before you were anybody—and be sure to thank them for all they have done on your behalf.
ACCEPT THAT YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE
You know you’ve arrived when you’ve got haters! Only a huge star like Marian can tell you without an ounce of self-pity that detractors are an inevitable part of any kind of success. But instead of wallowing in despair over a few catty comments, Marian says you’ve got to acknowledge this as an unavoidable fact of life. “Hindi lahat ng tao mapi-please mo. Kailangan natin tanggapin yan.”
KEEP LOVE IN YOUR LIFE—EVEN IF IT’S NOT THE ROMANTIC KIND
“Enjoy ang buhay sa pag-ibig, kasi kapag may love, lahat magagawa ng tama,” shares Marian. But take note, this in no way means that you’ve got to snag yourself a boyfriend to be happy! On the contrary, Marian says that the love of family and friends should bring more than enough joy to any person—and this should motivate you to succeed in life.
ALWAYS BE THANKFUL FOR WHATEVER YOU CAN GET
Let’s be realistic—the road to success is a rocky one, and you’ll probably have to go through a couple of detours before you finally get to where you want to be. But Marian says that no matter where you end up, never take anything for granted. “Kung ano man ang ibinigay sayo, magpasalamat ka,” she shares.
