Former Eat Bulaga! host Julia Clarete shared details about her relationship with her Irish husband Gareth McGeown for the first time last weekend.
In an interview with GMA-7 program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho on August 6, Julia said that she was ready and happy when she made the decision to start a family in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The former actress-TV host married her Irish partner last July at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in Ireland.
According to Julia, it was a conscious decision for them to make the celebration private.
It was in a golfing event around 2011 where Julia met her husband, who she also calls "Papa G."
Julia narrated, "Parang in-invite ako to grace the event, e nandun si Papa G.
"Wow, parang fate! Parang talagang tinadhana.
"Doon ako nakita ni Papa G.
"Nakita ko na siya, nakaganun sa akin, sabi ko, parang nakakita ng creature, ng magandang magandang creature!
"Tinignan ko na lang siyang ganun. Wala akong interes sa foreigner, e."
However, it was her Eat Bulaga! co-host Pauleen Luna and Kapuso TV host Drew Arellano who paved the way for the two to get to know each other.
She added, "After two weeks, si Pauleen, sabi ni Pauleen, 'Juls, may humihingi ng number mo, taga-soda company. Scottish yata.
"Tapos si Drew, nakilala pala siya ni Gareth sa isang event tapos naging vibes sila kasi nag-go-golf din si Drew, e.
"Si Drew, tinanong si Pauleen kung puwedeng kunin yung number ko.
"After two more weeks, nag-text na siya sa akin.
"Chichikahin niya ako tapos biglang, 'Do you want to have dinner some time?'
"Biglang di ako makasagot! Gusto kong sumagot pero parang ayoko kasi nga natakot ako.
"Nag-chichikahan kami ulit after one week, it went on for like four months na nagkukwentuhan lang kami, we never saw each other, may party kina Allan K."
It was in this party where her relationship with Gareth became deeper.
"Dapat kasi magdi-dinner lang kami tapos punta na ako kila Allan K.
"Tapos, nagkasarapan ng kuwentuhan, hinatak ko siya hanggang doon kela Allan K!
"Nag-drive siya, punta kami kina Allan tapos sinabi niya sa akin, 'You know that night, I knew you were special because when you got to Allan K's house...'
"Nanghiram ako ng damit ni Allan K para makalangoy ako. Sabi niya, noong nakita ko na wala kang pakialam kahit hindi ka ayos na ayos.
"First date natin yun pero nakita niya na agad na okay ka lang palang natural. Na-in love na siya nang husto! Pak!"
Speaking to host Jessica Soho, Julia has only sweet words for her husband.
She said, "He has a very good heart. As in, tagos hanggang buto yung kabaitan niya.
"He taught me to love again and to trust again.
"If you're blessed enough to be given that kind of person in your life, it may not be a boyfriend, it may not be a girlfriend.
"Even just a friend, talagang you will really value yung tao na yun. He's just really good to me."
However, the couple's beautiful relationship wasn't spared from problems.
This was when they decided to have a long-distance relationship.
"Five, six years into the relationship, nag-long distance na kami, talagang brineakan ko na siya.
"May mga times na hindi niya ako kinakausap kasi talagang away kami.
"It comes to a point... kasi I broke up with him na, e.
"Tapos, I was starting to see if I can go out with other guys.
"It comes to a point when you just ask yourself, 'Mahal mo ba? Pag mahal mo mahal mo."
Also, it's not a secret that Julia already has a son named Sebastian.
Julia is very much happy that Gareth gets along with her child, whose nickname is Seb.
She said, "Nakaka-touch, kasi the way Gareth cares for Seb is not just to win his favor, hindi.
"Siya talaga yung tingin niya kay Seb, anak talaga na, 'Ano ko 'to, kargo ko 'to.'
One time, Julia said, Gareth suddenly asked for them to go on a vacation in an island called Batu Batu.
"Nag-book siya ng resort, ganda-gandang resort!
"Gitna ng Singapore and Malaysia, there's a small tiny island called Batu Batu.
"Batu Batu is bato. E, di dapat, naisip ko na ring rock, may rock na ibibigay!
"Niyakap niya ako from behind, may dalang parang sando, parang plastic bag.
"Sabi niya, 'Juls, we've been together for five years and I think it's time. Will you be my wife?'
"Biglang nag-slow mo lahat!"
At first, Julia just wanted to have a simple wedding. However, it was Gareth who insisted on making their wedding more special.
"Sabi niya, 'You're my princess, I want you to have a princess-like wedding.'
"So we looked at castles in Ireland. So we went to Ballynahinch.
"When we got there, after five minutes, we fell in love with the place, we were like, this is where we want to get married."
Julia admitted that she misses the Philippines and hosting Eat Bulaga!, but she also enjoys living in Malaysia, doing things ordinary people do such as cooking and doing groceries.
She said, "Namamalengke ako sa wet market, and it's such a liberating feeling because no one seems to care!"
