Every Binibing Pilipinas we've sent to the Miss Universe pageant in the last few years had a trademark walk designed to create a memorable presence on stage. Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray had her iconic "lava walk" while Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach was famous for her "tanim-bala walk."
It was perhaps Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj who started the tradition with her "pilapil walk," followed by Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup who named hers the "tsunami walk." Meanwhile, Miss Universe 2012 1st runner-up Janine Tugonon slithered on stage with her "cobra walk"; Miss Universe 2013 3rd runner-up Ariella Arida set out with her "arriba walk"; Miss Universe-Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa developed the "camel walk"; Miss Universe-Philippines 2016 Maxine Medina perfected the "alta walk"; and Miss Universe-Philippines 2017 Rachel Peters mastered her "inifinity walk."
And now, a few days away from the most awaited Miss Universe 2019 competition, Philippines' very own Gazini Ganados has her own signature walk to show off. Introducing, the phoenix walk!
Back in June, in an interview with Boy Abunda, the 23-year-old beauty queen unveiled her runway prowess. Its earlier version was called the ganado walk, a word play on her surname and the Tagalog word that translates to enthusiasm.
Later on, Gazini has officially dubbed her walk as the phoenix. It's inspired by her Cary Santiago fuchsia gown, which she wore when she bagged the Miss Universe Philippines title.
In an interview with ABS-CBN, Gazini shares that she decided on this name partly because she's been consistent in wearing the Filipino designer's phoenix-laden creations. But more than this, the name also bears a symbolic meaning.
"It’s more than just a walk. It’s like every time I’m on stage, I feel like I’m soaring, I’m flying. Just like the phoenix, I’m soaring and I’m flying," she explained. How exciting!
