Folk singer Freddie Aguilar is scheduled to exchange wedding vows with his 16-year-old girlfriend today, November 22, through Islamic rites. According to a report from PEP.ph, this has been confirmed by Maguindanao Governor Esmael "Toto" Mangudadatu, who has been tasked to officiate the wedding.

The governor said that Freddie has agreed to convert his religion to Islam, so exchanging vows under the Muslim Family Code of the Philippines (Presidential Decree 1083) would not be an issue. Article 16 of the said provision states that "any Muslim male at least fifteen years of age and any Muslim female of the age of puberty or upwards and not suffering from any impediment under the provisions of this Code may contract marriage. A female is presumed to have attained puberty upon reaching the age of fifteen."

Mangudadatu added that Freddie has already expressed his intent to change his religion prior to the marriage.

"It will be his accountability to God," the governor responded, when asked if Freddie's conversion was speculated as a matter of "personal convenience."

The folk singer earned flak from netizens when his relationship with a minor was disclosed in October. He currently faces charges against Qualified Seduction.
