Falling in love with your special someone may be the easiest thing in the world, but maintaining a relationship is a completely different matter. While it takes a lot of effort to keep a relationship strong, the workload quadruples when you and your partner are both celebrities who are incessantly hounded by all sorts of intrigues from all sides.
That’s why we’ve got to give credit where it is due to Maricar Reyes and Richard Poon. These newlyweds may have gone through their fair share of individual intrigues, but their relationship, which Maricar describes as “nice, joyful, and calm” in the October 2013 issue of Good Housekeeping, is definitely shaping up to be one of the most-admired in the local showbiz world. Not that their road to love was easy—their transition from friends to lovers took a long time, but in the end, they proved that their slow romance was worth every second. Read on for a few things that Maricar learned along the way on her neverending journey as Richard’s true love.
1. BE HONEST.
Maricar admits that it was difficult for her at first to be honest with her feelings as she doesn’t like getting into fights, but it seems that she learned her lesson the hard way. “Sometimes, you really have to say what’s on your mind, even if it’ll be painful, because if you keep it inside, it will bubble over and it will come out even worse later on,” she relates.
2. BE OPEN.
Openness, Maricar says, is the core foundation of her relationship with Richard. “That’s how we can adjust,” she says. “How can you adjust If you don’t tell a person what you’re doing wrong, or how you really feel?”
3. KNOW THE WAY TO YOUR PARTNER’S HEART.
Maricar believes in the importance of knowing your significant other’s love language. “Love language niya kasi is words (His love language is words), he likes to hear feedback and info,” she says about Richard. “So if he does something that’s nice, I make it a point to tell him. I think he likes it when I appreciate the things he does for me.”
4. BE INTERESTED IN WHAT YOUR PARTNER DOES.
“It’s nice when he sees something that interests me, he makes plans na magawa namin 'yun. Like he knows na mahilig akong mag-exercise, so sinasabayan siya ako (It’s nice when he sees something that interests me, he makes plans for us to do that. Like, he knows that I like exercising, so he’ll join me.). One time we’d watch a film, and he’ll be on a treadmill and I’ll be on a bike. I like it when he makes ways to do things that I like,” Maricar shares. In return, she would join him when he indulges in one of his hobbies: assembling model kits.
