Mayone and Francis met through the social networking site, Friendster. Francis made the first move by sending Mayone a private message saying he found her adorable. Mayone shares, "I brushed off his compliment by asking who our common friend was. We played email tag for a bit until we decided to chat on YM. We chatted everyday every chance we got after that." The two's connection eventually blossomed into romance.
Two years into the relationship, Francis planned a special birthday surprise for Mayone. He fooled her into thinking that they had to get ready for the birthday dinner at 4 p.m., since they still had to meet Francis' cousin for Mayone's gift. He then brought Mayone and her son to the dock near the Manila Yacht Club, where Mayone was greeted by friends and family.
The surprise didn't stop there. After presenting Mayone with a copy of her favorite book, Francis got down on one knee, and popped the question in front of everyone. Taken by surprise, Mayone fell to her knees, too. Everyone had to coach her to stand up as she shouted "Yes!"
