While most people see the fashion industry as one that's full of glamour, wedding gown designer Jazel Sy is quick to point out that her job entails a lot of hard work and creativity. "It is a wonderful job. But aside from being creative, you have to be patient, a hard worker, and a good communicator" says Jazel.
Having a dialogue with her clients is something that Jazel puts great importance in. She narrates, "I listen to what the client wants. I don't just design based on my likes and dislikes. I ask for their ideas and about their style, and if they are comfortable to wear a certain type of cut or not." By doing so, Jazel makes sure that she and the client see eye to eye.
For Jazel, designing is a form of expression, and her pieces are her artworks. She finds the middle ground between her client's taste and her aesthetic sense to come up with exquisitely crafted creations. "I pay attention to every detail of the gowns that I make. I have to be satisfied with it, or else I won't be at peace with myself. Knowing that I am happy with the way my creations came out is a great feeling," she shares. Of course, Jazel also values her clients' feedback. She adds, "Getting compliments from my clients and other people is an achievement. That motivates me to be more creative and to work much harder."
Jazel recognizes that her clients have various personalities, and so to keep up with different demands, she makes it a point to play with various styles. Of her creations, she says, "The classic and elegant design elements will always be present, but expect to see a few twists here and there. I plan to create modern and unique pieces with less beadwork. Variety is always good."
Whatever new designs Jazel comes up with, her clients can look forward to Jazel's commitment to bring the dream dress to life. She says, "Weddings are exciting because they are fairy tales come true. It's a story where love is supreme because the princess has met her prince charming--and I'm the Fairy Godmother who makes sure that the princess wears a fabulous dress."
