What's your leadership style?

Are you authoritarian, democratic, or delegative? Find out by taking this quiz! By Belle Yambao

Do you work well when you're in a position of leadership? Are you the kind of leader of who likes assigning tasks with as much detail as possible? Do you often consider your colleagues' opinions before making your final decision? Or perhaps you prefer to make sure everyone on your team has equal say when it comes to work.

Psychologist Kurt Lewin has identified three major styles of leadership: authoritarian, democratic, and delegative. If you're a career woman who aspires to be in a managerial position (or perhaps you already are in one!), take this quiz. Find out more about your leadership style so that you can improve your skills! Don't forget to share your result in a comment.

1 .) You were assigned as the team leader for a project at work. How do you go about delegating tasks?
  1. You distribute the tasks among your coworkers and instruct them as quickly as possible. It doesn't matter who does what as long as you explain what they have to do clearly.
  2. You ask your coworkers about their respective fields of expertise and divide the tasks accordingly.
  3. You let your coworkers choose their tasks. The happier they are with what they're doing, the better the results will be.
2 .) How strict are you with deadlines?
  1. Very strict. You don't tolerate tardiness because it makes the team look inefficient.
  2. Strict. You expect your subordinates to understand that being late will compromise the work of other teams.
  3. Not too strict. What matters more is that your subordinates submit thorough work that they're confident in, so you're flexible whenever you can be.
3 .) Your subordinate just made a mistake in her work that will cause the team to take longer with finishing a presentation. How do you let her know what she did was wrong?
  1. Reprimand her face-to-face so that she will understand how serious the situation is. This will help her remember not to do it in the future.
  2. Sit down with her and explain what she did wrong, giving suggestions so that she can avoid repeating the mistake in the future.
  3. Let it go. Scolding her won't undo the mistake, and it's clear she's already aware of her missteps. It's better to focus on creating solutions.
4 .) What kind of atmosphere do your work meetings usually have?
  1. Efficient and business-oriented. You like meetings to be short and to the point so that nothing gets misunderstood and everyone can get to work on their tasks immediately afterward.
  2. Energetic and creative. You want your teammates to contribute and talk about as many ideas as possible to improve the system you have at work.
  3. Laidback. You want everyone to talk honestly about their thoughts and feelings as if you were conversing casually over lunch.
5 .) When you're leading a group, what do you want your teammates to see you as?
  1. Their boss. You need to establish respect and authority so that your teammates will not hesitate to follow your lead in the future.
  2. Their mentor. You want them to feel free to ask you for guidance and for answers to their questions.
  3. Their friend. You want no division between you and your teammates so that you'll work more efficiently as a team.
6 .) You're distributing tasks for your team's next big presentation, but there's one task no one wants to do. How do you deal with this?
  1. Assign it to someone anyway. You all have to do what you have to do in order to finish the project.
  2. Ask if anyone's willing to take the task for the welfare of the group. If no one does, you'll do it yourself.
  3. Take the task on yourself. Someone has to do it, and you need to show you're willing to work with the group.
7 .) It's your new hire's first day on the job today. How do you brief her?
  1. You discuss her responsibilities with her and give her precise instructions regarding her tasks so that she won't have a hard time adjusting.
  2. You walk her through her tasks for the day so that she'll be better equipped to do things on her own the next day.
  3. You instruct her to shadow one of the other people on your team, then let her try things out for herself.
8 .) You just made a decision about a specific work problem, and your teammates didn't like it. How do you react?
  1. You remind them that, in the end, you're still in charge and have the final say. While they don't see the merits of your decision now, they'll understand why you did it in the long run.
  2. You ask them for their opinions before making your final decision.
  3. You ask for the opinion of your teammate who's an expert on the matter and change your decision accordingly.
9 .) How detailed are you when it comes to giving your teammates instructions?
  1. You specify exactly how you want things done and give them a timeframe.
  2. You give them their tasks and suggest methods you find most efficient in accomplishing them.
  3. You let your teammates accomplish their tasks in whatever method they find suits them best.
10 .) Your team is finishing a presentation when your superior suddenly assigns you with a rush job. How do you deal?
  1. You delegate tasks among your members for the rush job and oversee both the old and new operations.
  2. You divide your team in two and make sure you contribute to both.
  3. You put some of your teammates in charge of the new job while you help the others finish your main presentation.
