No budget for nights out? Go for cheap thrills instead

Jul 24, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

If you actually dread Friday nights and weekends because you have no budget for weekend gimmicks and shopping trips, don't fret. Fun doesn't exactly translate to nights out alone, so why not be creative with the things you could do? Here are some alternative activities if you have to wait until the next payday to go shopping and partying.

1. Start a hobby that you can do freely on days off work. This can be anything from playing a musical instrument (save money by asking a friend to teach you) to tending a garden or doing something creative like writing or origami.

2. Organize a picnic at the park with family or friends. It won't cost you much since picnic food is usually simple, and you can even ask friends to pitch in!

3. Go on a sleepover. If you can't go out, host a simple slumber party at home and invite your friends. One of your friends may be generous enough to let you crash at their place if you can't host it yourself. Enjoy a night of high-school style sleepover--gossip, pig out on junk food, or just go on a movie marathon. The possibilities are endless!

4. Make exercise fun by biking, jogging, or playing basketball, football, or whatever you fancy with friends. You don't have to get an expensive gym membership to enjoy activities like these!

5. Brush up your photography skills and organize a shoot weekend for anything you have in mind--nature, sports, and people, among so many others. You can even ask your friends to flex their modeling skills, and that in itself is already fun to conceptualize!
