A survey by New Outlooks in Science & Engineering (Noise) showed that teenage girls would rather become models than study medicine or some other science course.
Out of 506 girls aged 13 to 18 surveyed, only 14 percent were planning to take science studies, whereas 32 percent would rather pursue a modeling career. Four percent wanted to study engineering, while 12 percent were willing to become housewives. Acting also proved to be the second most popular choice at 29 percent.
It may be disturbing to note, however, that 35 percent of the girls said they didn't want science-related careers because of lack of knowledge on the subject and how these careers are hardly represented in media. Noise believes that the negative portrayal of these subjects is one reason these aspiring celebrities would never give science a second thought.
To convince more girls to pursue science-related careers, Noise enlisted the help of young students and professionals who have found fulfillment in engineering and science. The results of this campaign have yet to be seen.
