How much do TV characters make in real life?

Oct 23, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

samanthawho_1.jpgYou see them wearing fabulous outfits, driving luxury cars, and going on lavish vacations, among other things you can only dream of doing, as you watch their fictional lives unfold on television. But have you ever wondered how much your favorite TV characters actually make in real life?

CNN.com and CareerBuilder.com estimated the median salaries of some of our favorite TV characters' real-life counterparts by consulting CBSalary.com. From their calculations, we learned that a forensics expert, such as the Dexter Morgan character in Dexter, gets as much as $47,680 (at least $2.2 million) per year. Chiropractors like Alan Harper in Two and a Half Men apparently do well at $65,890 (P3 million), while psychotherapists like Dr. Gina Toll in In Treatment earn as much as $180,000 a year (P8.4 million)--with just one client at that.

Real estate seems to pay well, too, as real-life counterparts of Samantha Newly in Samantha Who? earn an estimated $145,051 (P6.8 million) each year. That may explain how Samantha can afford to wear anything she wants--and it helps that she still lives in her parents' house.

However, those who work for the service industry don't earn as much. Restaurant owners like Ned of Pushing Daisies only make $21,241 by rough estimate, although Ned doesn't have to worry much since he gets extra income from solving murders, thanks to his extraordinary talent. Waiters like Olive Snook of Pushing Daisies, meanwhile, earn an estimated $15,850 (P744,950), but that's a better rate compared to annual earnings of their counterparts here in the Philippines.

Which TV character's income are you curious about? Do you think Carrie Bradshaw can afford to have all those Manolo Blahniks from her columnist's income?
