We hear about domestic violence all the time, but how many of us are actually doing something to fight it? Taking a stand against it can be as simple as knowing signs of abuse to look for and lending an ear to victims.

Studies by UK-based research firm Ipsos Mori showed that one in three women from all cultures and walks of life suffer from physical or mental abuse during their lifetimes. While some victims of abuse choose to remain silent, research also found that confiding in someone and seeking counsel are some of the effective ways to combat damage caused by abuse.
Research by The Body Shop showed that 59 per cent of women suffering from abuse would confide in friends, but fewer would seek help from authorities such as the police (at least 21 per cent) or support groups (14 per cent). Here are some signs to watch for in victims who have difficulty speaking up about their plight:
- The victim suddenly becomes quieter and more withdrawn from family and friends.
- She tenses up and makes others feel unwelcome when her partner is around.
- She has expressed at least once that her partner is either possessive or jealous.
- She has bruises or cuts.
- She ends phone calls and conversations abruptly when her partner appears.
