The United States is not the only country experiencing economic crises right now, as the world's developed economies--United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan--have also slid into recession. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has even called this the first time it has seen such alarming recessions for its members since 1970.
In the United States alone, claims for unemployment benefits have gone up by 32,000, higher than analysts' expectations. The unemployment rate also rose to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent. Big companies are laying off more people than ever--even media titan Time Inc. has asked for 100 volunteers from the editorial staff of Time, People, and Sports Illustrated to give up their jobs.
