Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson may be sitting at the helm of the most anticipated movie this Valentine’s Day, but there was a time when Angelina Jolie was also in the running for the gig.

In the latest issue of Porter magazine, Taylor-Johnson recounts an email Jolie had very graciously sent to her. “I got an email out of the blue from her saying good luck on your journey,” Taylor-Johnson says. “I thought that was incredibly sweet of her.”

Got passed over for a promotion? Follow in Jolie’s footsteps and offer your sincerest congratulations on whoever made the cut. It’s not quite the same as missing out on directing a hot and mostly naked Irishman by the name of Jamie Dornan, but you get the picture.

If you can’t accept the loss, well, keep your mouth shut instead. For one, spreading flak about your co-worker—even if she does deserve it—will only reflect badly on you. For another, you could use the time to reassess yourself. “If you’re told you aren’t going to advance, you can’t let the disappointment stunt your performance or your career. Instead, you need to act,” reports Harvard Business Review.
