Why you should start liking malunggay

Jun 20, 2009 by FN's Shar Bareng

malunggay.jpgExperts don't call malunggay the "miracle vegetable" for nothing. Aside from being an ingredient in the local dish monggo, there are a lot of other yummy dishes wherein you can use malunggay as the main ingredient to ensure you get its many nutrients.

Here are just some of the malunggay dishes recently concocted by chefs of Café Ilang Ilang and Mabuhay Palace Restaurant at the Manila Hotel: Braised Malunggay Tofu with Assorted Mushrooms, Malunggay Meat Loaf, Malunggay Tempura, and even Thousand Layer Malunggay Cake! These were accompanied by beverages such as Malunggay Tea and Malunggay Pandan Juice.

Not only do these dishes sound delicious, they're very healthy, too. We've always been told by elders that malunggay improves blood circulation, but we didn’t know that it's also rich in Vitamin C, calcium, potassium, iron, and Vitamin A. Research even showed that malunggay leaves help neutralize and negate the effects of carcinogens.

"These days, it can be a challenge to unite healthy eating with great dining," said Nian Liwanag-Rigor, Assistant Vice President for Corporate Communications of the Manila Hotel. "But these dishes prove that we can make mouthwatering food out of an extremely healthy ingredient like malunggay."

Now that you know what else this underrated vegetable can yield, can you imagine making your own unique malunggay dish? Share it with us!
