Why not try pole dancing?

Sep 30, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

We've already heard of how belly dancing can help us grind our love handles away. Now, pole dancing--yes, the very same dance that Natalie Portman once did as a stripper in Closer--is now gaining popularity among the weight-conscious group as an exercise that breaks one’s inhibitions while helping eliminate flabs?

If you're not comfortable with the idea at first, it might help to know that the Pole Dance fitness Association of the Philippines has some rules and objectives as a sport and exercise, and in fact insists that it be called "pole dance fitness."

Some classes in the United States don't even allow men in the class, and insist on hiring an all-woman crew. In the Philippines, however, classes in the Movement Dance Studio in Greenhills are even taught by a male.

According to pole dance instructor Ed Aniel, pole dancing not only defines muscles, tones the arms, thighs, and buttocks; it also improves strength, flexibility, muscle control, balance, and posture. And, since it is primarily a sensual dance, just the mere act of internalizing the moves can already make the dancer feel sexy.

While the moves require some practice, students eventually learn to get over the initial shyness. After a while, women learn to feel at ease even when they're wearing skimpy clothes and high heels.

If you'd like to try pole dancing yourself, you can get in touch with Movement Dance Studios by calling 721-7711, or visit them at the third floor of Promenade Bldg., Wilson cor. P. Guevarra Sts., Greenhills, San Juan.
