What kind of headache do you often experience?

Sep 5, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

A headache is not as simple as most of us seem to think, even if it may be cured easily with aspirin. Health.com explains that you need to know what kind of headache you are experiencing each time so you can get the right treatment for it. Which of these headaches are common to you?

  1. The tension headache puts pressure on the temples or back of the head and neck. Tension headaches do not keep you from your activities since it does not come with nausea and vomiting. It can be treated easily with aspirin.
  2. Cluster headaches affect men more than women and occur suddenly, often in groups or cycles. A person suffering from a cluster headache feels pain on one side of the head while experiencing watery eyes and runny nose on the same side. Cluster headaches may be genetic, and there is no sure cure even if some medication may help reduce the frequency of attacks.
  3. A sinus headache is usually thought to be a cold symptom. However, an infected sinus that usually comes with a fever may need to be diagnosed by MRI or CT scan, or the presence of pus. Treatment often requires antibiotics, antihistamines, and decongestants.
  4. You can blame your rebound headaches to an overdose of painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen, since too much medication can overexcite the brain. It may also happen when the level of medicine in the bloodstream becomes lower.
  5. A headache becomes a migraine when it lasts from four to 72 hours and is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound. It may also follow five previous episodes of headaches, and often feels like a one-sided pain, throbbing pain, moderate to severe pain, or pain that stops activity.

In case you experience something more severe than tension headache, it's still best to consult a doctor and avoid self-medication. That way, you may also know what could be causing your headache and learn if you need more treatment than you thought.
