Some guidelines on the wedding buffet

Jun 20, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

wedding_buffet.jpgAh, wedding food--the one thing that guests are sure to look forward to or peer critically at when the big day comes. While some caterers already have staple items on their menus that are also tried and tested, it's still safe to remember some safety guidelines for your wedding buffet.

  1. Know your guests. From the guest list you pretty much have an idea of the people who'll be attending your wedding, so this will be an important factor for determining the food that you'll have to order from the caterers. Make sure that you have enough options for every age group.
  2. Go into details with the caterer. Lynn Arroyo of Okasyon Et Al recommends clients to go over the details of the ingredients used for the food when talking to caterers. She stresses that the couple must speak directly to the head, and not just a secretary or assistant so that the caterer can vouch for the safety of the food to be served.
  3. Avoid dishes with nuts. You can never avoid having guests with seafood allergies, but the one thing you have to watch out for are peanuts, which can be deadly and may cause instant death for guests with peanut allergies even with the slightest airborne contact. If you can't avoid serving peanuts, be sure to warn guests with allergies about food which may contain peanut products such as peanut oil, peanut butter, and nuts.
  4. Serve fish. Fish is a safer option compared to meat for guests with crucial diets such as elders or those with special medical conditions, so be sure to give them enough options on dishes with fish.
