How to drink eight glasses of water

Jul 11, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

While medical experts are still at odds on whether to follow the old eight-glasses-of-water-a-day rule, one of the best ways to stay healthy is still to keep your body hydrated. Proper hydration translates to well-moisturized skin, better waste excretion, and even a decreased rate in colon cancer.

Fortunately, the rule doesn't have to be limited to water, so you can also resort to coffee, fruit juice, tea, and more. If you're trying out this old rule of thumb for the first time, we've come up with a guide to help ensure you are drinking those eight (or even more) glasses of water.

  1. Upon waking up, drink a glass of water. For breakfast, accompany your meal with a cup of coffee or a glass of juice or milk. (Glass count: two)
  2. Fill your office mug or cup with water and make sure to drink it all while working on the desk in the morning. (Glass count: three)
  3. Drink at least two glasses of water while eating lunch. Water can be replaced with juice, iced tea, or soda. (Glass count: five)
  4. Take a coffee break in the afternoon (Glass count: six). While working for the rest of the day, keep your office mug or cup close. (Glass count: seven)
  5. Drink a glass of water at dinner (Glass count: eight).
  6. Take a nightcap before bedtime--this can either be a cup of tea or a glass of milk. (Glass count: nine)

It's still possible, after all. Of course, the amount of water you need also depends on you. Children and adults who suffer from colds are prescribed to have as much liquid intake as possible, while pregnant women are encouraged to drink at least one to two liters of water per day between meals, but not at meal times. Just be sure to not skip trips to the washroom, too!
