Gym etiquette for beginners

Most gyms have their own house rules, but it's important to acquaint yourself with the basic ones before you enroll in a gym. These rules all have to do with members' safety, convenience, and of course, care for the equipment you use. Read on so you won't have to endure sweaty glares when you do start going to the gym.

1. Wear the proper or appropriate attire for exercise.

2. Return weights to the racks when you're finished with them. It's the simple rule we learned from school libraries, and a basic act of courtesy for the next users.

3. Don't drop weights. You probably see this a lot in the movies, but in real life this is actually forbidden. You might injure yourself or others when you drop weights on the floor, or even damage the equipment. So unless you want to spend more on equipment or treatment from the injury, always put down these weights gently.

4. No sweat! Be careful to wipe your sweat off the equipment for sanitary reasons. It's also a good idea to lay out a towel before you use a bench.

5. Hush-hush. You’re not exactly forbidden to open your mouth when you’re in the gym, but some people get easily irritated by noise while they're concentrating on their workouts. If you love chatting with your gym buddy while you work out, it's best to keep your voices low at the very least.
