Get the energy sans coffee

Jul 4, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

Coffee is irresistible, especially if you're looking for a quick pick-me-up during sleepy hours at work. But what about people who hate coffee but need to stay awake? We got some tips from iVillage.com about keeping the energy up sans the caffeine dose.

  1. Go to bed with the goal of getting enough rest. It depends on the person about how much sleep he or she needs, but the important thing is to make sure you wake up feeling refreshed.
  2. Do some exercises in the morning! This works better than coffee, since it wakes up both your mind and body more effectively.
  3. Eat a good breakfast. As our resident columnists Luz Callanta and Nina Dacanay point out, a good and balanced breakfast can do wonders.
  4. Try some breathing exercises. iVillage's Kathy Smith says periodic breathing exercises gives her an immediate boost.
  5. Do some stretching exercises even while you're sitting. If you can afford to spare a few minutes, why not take a walk?
  6. Listen to music (but try to avoid lullaby-like tunes).
  7. Take advantage of your office's lights-off-at-lunch policy by taking five-minute naps, so you can refresh for the afternoon rush.
