Bike for a cause

Sep 9, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

tourofhope.jpgLove biking? You could help save victims of cervical cancer when you join bikers all over the country in Tour of Hope, a five-day, 500-km bike tour from Vigan to Subic Bay on Sept 13 to 17.

To help raise awareness for cervical cancer, Tour of Hope will also host lay lectures by doctors from the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network (CECAP) about cervical cancer prevention and vaccination at every stop. The lectures will take place at stops in Vigan, Candon, Agoo, Alaminos, and Iba.

If you can't participate in the bike tour, you can opt to pledge on a biker. All funds raised through sponsorship and pledges will be donated to the Cancer Institute Foundation for CECAP, particularly to the fund for cervical cancer screenings in communities across the country. CECAP hopes to reduce cancer incidence through the Single Approach Visit (SVA), which combines both screening through Visual Inspection using Acetic Acid (VIA) and on-the-spot cyrotherapy in one session.

"SVA for communities all over the country would initially cost 1.6 M," said Dr. Cecilia Llave, chair of the UP-PGH Cancer Institute.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, with 500,000 cases and 250,000 deaths occurring every year. Over 80 per cent of cases occur in developing countries such as the Philippines, where the disease is ranked as the second most common cancer afflicting Filipino women. However, the disease is preventable through a new vaccine, and can also be treated if diagnosed early.

For more information on the Tour of Hope, contact Dr. Grace Chan of the CIF on 526-6953 or Joyette Jopson of Team David’s Salon at 0917-8827352.
