Angry? Just breathe

May 2, 2008 by FN's Shar Bareng

angry_thermometer.jpgYou've got to hand it to the hotter-than-usual Manila summer for turning people into hotheads these days. If you're at the edge of your temper more than usual, you can actually do something about it without seeking therapy, which wouldn't be friendly on your pocket (and might even put your temper at boiling point). We’ve compiled some nice tips from MayoClinic.com and TheHappyguy.com that you can try just in case you're at the point of gripping the table and getting your throat in gear for a yelling session.

  1. Trust us, counting to ten really works. It may be one of those old tips, but you’ll see the difference if you take time to breathe and let the angry waves pass little by little. TheHappyGuy.com recommends new improved variations of counting to ten such as breathing deeply in between each number.
  2. Have a glass of cold water in hand—not for throwing, mind you, but for bringing down your inner temperature. The key word is to chill, after all.
  3. Try to visualize your happy place, or a relaxing experience like a grand vacation you’ve recently had, and make it your mental Zen corner.
  4. Instead of taking your anger out through yelling, try to vent it on a physically exerting activity instead. This would be the perfect time to go for a walk, maybe even a jog, or lift weights.
  5. It is okay to express your anger through talking, but try to do that once you’ve initially calmed down. You’ll find that you’ll be able to explain yourself more effectively and yes, calmly, after you’ve let yourself cool down a bit. There’s still nothing like saying exactly why you’re angry, especially since dealing with piled-up reasons much later is even worse.
  6. Try to see the lighter or more humorous side of the situation without being sarcastic—a little laugh can lighten up the confrontation and make it easier for you to get over the anger.
